Egg Donations

Untitled-2
Hi All.

As you all know at Newlands Primary School we are having an old school voting day, vote and grab a snag/cake/coffee on your way through.
For the early birds in the neighbourhood we will have eggs and bacon sizzling at 8am and we're hoping to sell local eggs.
We know there are a lot of local chooks in the area, are yours laying at the moment? Is your fridge full of eggs? Would you like to donate some to NPS? Or even sell us some?
If this sounds like a great way to make some space in your fridge please contact Mel on 0404 043 010 or melmate@hotmail.com

Cheers Mel.

Letter to the Leader

Untitled-2

Dear Editor

Last Sunday I did some planting on top of the hill behind the old Kodak
site in Coburg North with Friends of Edgars Creek. This is such an
enjoyable and positive thing to do, it is always great to be with so
many people who really care about their environment and making it better
for us and future people to enjoy. But this time it was really spoilt
as we had just finished planting and went to turn on the pump to push
water up to our buckets at the top of the hill so we could water the
plants and give them a good start to their new life in the ground - but
were shocked to discover that our pump had been stolen! Not an easy
thing to pick up and take away you would think
- but somehow it had gone! The group is totally reliant on volunteer
time and effort to do the physical work of planting and looking after
our sites and to obtain grant funding to purchase plants, and equipment,
so to replace the pump will not be a trivial thing. As well as the
really big inconvenience of losing our pump we are just gob smacked that
anyone would do such a thing - please, whoever took it, bring us our
pump back!

Newlands Gardens Triplets

Untitled-2

Three events (not babies!!!) related to fertility are upcoming in the Hood.
The first one celebrates the abundance of our gardens and the kindness to others: the Open Table mob (http://www.open-table.org/sample-page/) organise community dinners each first Sunday of the month. They are quite adept at making up a meal with whatever turns up, in whatever quantities. If there are donations in excess of what they need for the night, they hand it out to the dining guests to take home.
As next week is Fair Food Week (fairfoodweek.org.au/) Open Table and  Moreland Food Gardens Network (http://www.morelandfoodgardensnetwork.org/) are hosting a feast, gathering some food-vulnerable people and sustainable food activists, next Sunday 25th August.
The idea is to draw on the various gardens around Moreland for crowd-funding the fresh elements of the feast. I will contribute from my own garden and also wonder if there is any chance of contributions from our community of Newlands (or beyond) gardeners.
If that sounds like you and your garden:
1.     Email me by Friday night (pascalelocal@hotmail.com) what you have to contribute – I’ll compile amounts and let the Open Table’s chefs know – they are creative but value a bit of notice. No need to go pillaging the pantry, they are only after excess garden produce –even a leaf or a sprig, one lemon or one potato are welcome (more if you have, obviously!); put together that what will make a feast (yes, they know there could be quite a bit of silverbeets and winter greens, cabbagey stuff and citrus). If, by any chance, you had excess eggs, honey, jams and pickles or you make your own bread or baked goods, of course that would be welcome – but not essential.
2.     Bring the stuff to my place (for those who do not know me, I’ll give you the address by return email) between Friday 3pm to Sunday 11 am. There will be buckets and boxes provided in my driveway.
3.     I’ll make sure it all gets to the feast on Sunday.
The second event celebrates the abundance and sharing between our Newlands gardeners and food lovers (if you eat, you can be in!) with the
First Birthday of the Newlands Gardens Food Swap.
Sunday September 8th -2-3pm - Hutchinson Place.
Yes we have a plan B if it rains. Bring whatever home grown or made food you have in excess to share and swap– BTW that extends to knowledge (about food or gardening), cuttings, seedlings … I have just started on tomatoes seedlings and others and may have raspberries’ cuttings ready. As always, there will be free pots, potting mix and rooting hormone if you want to strike cuttings, share seedlings and so on.
The third event is the very essence of fertility: The Feed for Food Co-op is organising its spring order of these bearers of Fertility – various straws and manures …
Pea straw: $12.90
Wheat straw: $11.90
Chicken - cow manure – Mushroom compost: $4.90
 Sheep manure: $5.50
You can also order chicken feed if the tons of buckwheat that our neighbourhood rescued from getting landfilled has ran out (thanks Mel for that!).
Mixed grains – 25Kg - $22.90
Organic pellets – 25 Kg - $38.50
Red Hen – 30Kg - $28.90
Any items that Andrew’s on Sydney Rd sells can be added to this list as long as you have a clear name for it and its price.
Our aim is to connect neighbourhoods’ gardeners and prevent many small trips down Sydney Rd when you could pick it up locally with a trolley or wheelbarrow.
Email your order to melmate@hotmail.com before 12/09/13 and pay for it (preferably by direct deposit) by 15/09/13 for a delivery the following week. Delivery point (or points if really a lot gets ordered) will depend on who orders this time.
 Enjoy the coming of Spring!

House would suit a family, a single person or a couple.....
Queen bed in Main bedroom, single loft bed and single in 2nd room and fold out king single duvan in smallest room.
We don't want any money for rent, but would like our cat fed,  garden watered if the weather is warm (here's hoping!).

Another Co-op?

Untitled-2

Hi Guys,
There are a couple of co-ops in Newlands – I am interested in starting another if there are enough keen folk.   Dry foods – nuts, whole grains, legumes etc.
I have been also looking into sourcing some health foods (health food shop type stuff including multi V if  we have enough interested).
I am having a meeting at my place – this Friday at 4pm – 13 Meadow St Coburg – if you are interested.

Come and Vote at Newlands Primary School

Untitled-2
The Federal Election is just around the corner and the most convenient place to vote is Newlands Primary School.
You can vote at NPS if you live in either Wills or Batman, we are a double voting extravaganza!!!!
We are going traditional this year and you can purchase a sausage in bread, an egg and bacon roll, a delicious home baked treat, a real coffee (yes, made from a coffee machine) or some exceptionally sugary fairy floss.
Our gardens are looking particularly beautiful at the moment and voting will be a real pleasure at Newlands Primary School this year.

Fair Food

Untitled-2

CERES Fair Food is an online organic grocer and carbon neutral food delivery service in Melbourne that is helping to create healthier, happier, and more secure local food systems. Because we source certified organic food from local farmers and artisans, shopping with us puts your groceries to good work, keeping our local economies strong, and ensuring we have access to affordable and sustainably grown food into the future. We pay local organic farmers a fair price for their sustainably grow organic fruits and vegetables, sticking with them throughout the growing season, so they can focus on what they do best – growing our food!
Fair Food also offers a wide range of organic health foods, such as freshly baked organic breads, biodynamic milk made by local artisans and farming families, and other eco-friendly and natural products for the home and body.
Our unique distribution method significantly reduces the distance food travels – keeping our carbon footprint low, while reconnecting our community with where their food comes from.
CERES Fair Food is a social enterprise that employs and trains a team of hard-working people who haven’t always had the easiest time finding a job.
Our team is committed to reducing, reusing and recycling just about everything, including our green waste, which is donated to local community farms, such as the CERES Market Garden and the Croxton School Garden to be turned into worm food.
Did you know we have a Fair Food host right here in Newlands????
Mel and Andy at 29 Peterson Ave are a drop off/pick up point every Thursday night.
Check out the website to find out how to join up http://www.ceresfairfood.org.au/about-fair-food/

Launch of Report on Housing, Employment and Social Cohesion in Coburg‏

Untitled-2

Moreland City Council and RMIT University cordially invite you to the official launch of a research report on housing, employment and social cohesion in Coburg and Fawkner.

Moreland Council in partnership with researchers from RMIT University and the University of Western Sydney, recently completed a research project investigating the role of housing, employment and local community in generating social cohesion in multicultural neighbourhoods 'in transition'.

The study compared Fawkner and Coburg, neighbourhoods currently experiencing social, demographic and economic change through the interactions between new migrant communities and established residents as well as through the process of the gentrification of inner Melbourne. The project was funded by a grant from the Scanlon Foundation.

The final report is available for download now and will be disseminated to other Local Government Areas (LGAs) with similar profiles and experiencing similar issues across Australia. http://www.moreland.vic.gov.au/community-services/community-development-programs/Housing-employment-social-cohesion.html
