Community Event

Our Wonderful Mountain Ash Forests –
time to protect them

Come along and hear about the wonderful Central Highland Ash forest and its iconic Leadbeater’s Possum.
Victoria's most spectacular mountain ash forest is on our door step (near Healesville and Warburton just over an hour away). It is our water catchment and home to Victoria's emblem, the Leadbeater's Possum.  Thought of as the forests ‘canary in the coalmine’ as an indicator of the health of the forest, the Leadbeater's Posssum is now critically endangered.
7.30pm    Wednesday 15th July  2015
Cost $10

Information: Cath 0468 963 868
Julie 0431 700 313

Our very special guest speaker is Steve Meacher, a Toolangi-based forest educator, President of Friends of Leadbeater's Possum, Chairman of Healesville Environment Watch and Vice-President of My Environment. He is active in the community to protect it from clearfell logging and to establish the Great Forest National Park.
How can our local community be part of the campaign to protect the Leadbeater's Possum and create the Great Forest National Park?
Come and meet other Darebin and Moreland locals, passionate about our environment and enjoy some music, home cooked food, refreshments and fabulous bush poetry.

Tell me more!
We aim to provide a free, weekly, timed 5km running and walking event to every community that wants one, thereby strengthening community connections and helping reduce the prevalence of chronic lifestyle related diseases.
parkrun (always one word, always lowercase) is not a race against other runners, but a 5km timed run, jog or walk. It can really be whatever you want it to be, whether that's for fun or as part of a training plan.

Coburg parkrun offers an opportunity for all members of our local community, male or female, young or old, to come together on a regular basis to enjoy our beautiful reserves, lake and creek and get physically active in the process. We want to encourage people to walk, jog or run together irrespective of their ability – this event is truly open to all and best of all it really is FREE!

Taking part is easy – just register in advance by 6pm on the Friday before your first ever parkrun event. The great thing is that you only ever need to do this once! Then just set your alarm for Saturday morning and get yourself there!

Calling all parents in the Coburg/Preston area! Need someone to look after the kids during the upcoming school hoildays? Look no further!

My name's David, I am 26 years old, currently studying a Masters of Primary Teaching at Melbourne Uni. I am fun and friendly, and love working with kids. When I babysit I like to go on adventures, make up games, play sport and cook yummy food with the kids I look after.
I have been babysitting since I was 13, and have worked in After School Cares for 4 years.
I am available all school holidays during the day or night. You can reach me on 0424 556 531 or davidwh.boston@gmail.com.
Here's a photo of me (on the left) with my friend Will on top of Mt Wellington in Hobart.
Thanks very much!

Asylum Seekers

We’re getting pretty used to horror stories out of Nauru but this one is hard to top.
In the dead of night on June 4, the Government spirited away a five-month-old baby and her parents to the detention centre on Nauru.
Asleep in the Melbourne immigration centre, they were roughly woken by officers and hustled on to a plane.  Not even their lawyer was told about the transfer.
This beautiful five-month-old girl – ‘Asha’ – is one of a number of babies born in Australia to asylum seeker parents who are all due to be sent to Nauru under the Government’s offshore detention policies.
Before the forced transfer to Nauru, Asha was thriving.
But Asha’s mother was so stressed by the forcible transfer, she felt she wasn’t producing enough breastmilk to feed her baby.
The replacement formula she was initially given made Asha sick, so there were days when she was screaming with hunger.
Asha’s family, like other families on Nauru, lives in a mouldy tent that leaks when it rains.  There are rats in the compound.
The overcrowded living conditions make communicable disease a real threat to a tiny baby.  With inadequate mosquito protection for Asha, dengue fever is also a risk.
No wonder Asha’s parents are worried sick about her.
It’s simple: Nauru detention is no place for babies
What makes this situation even more heartbreaking is that there is a wealth of evidence to show that putting children in detention on Nauru is incredibly harmful.
The Australian Human Rights Commission found at least one in three children in detention is suffering a mental illness requiring psychiatric care – the stats are worse for Nauru.
And the Government’s own Moss Review found evidence of physical and sexual abuse against children and women in detention on Nauru.
Help us get Asha back to Australia
Asha’s mum has asked us to do everything we can to help get her baby off Nauru.
How you can help:
  1. Attend a rally in person. Spread the word and bring friends and family with you. RSVP for Melbourne event here. The Sydney event will be at 5.30pm, Tuesday 30 June, Sydney Square, beside Town Hall – more details to come.
  2. Hold your own event (if you’re not in Melbourne or Sydney)
  3. Show your support on social media with a photo or message to Asha using the hashtag #BringBackAsha
  4. Speak out: write to your MP, Senators and local media and lift the veil of secrecy the Government is trying to place around Asha and around 17 other babies who may also be sent to Nauru.
Working together, we can turn this terrible situation around for Asha and for the other babies who could share her fate.
