A Free Event on Indigenous Rights


25 years since the Deaths in Custody Report was released .........


Come and hear a human rights lawyer speak about Indigenous Health and Incarceration.


Presented by Amnesty International Northcote.



Aboriginal Australians are being Imprisoned at an unprecedented rate. Indigenous Australians make up 3% of our general population but 27% of our prison population. This has a huge impact on Aboriginal communities. Ruth Barson, from the Human Rights Law Centre will speak about factors impacting on the critically high rates of imprisonment and what changes might address the problem.

Ruth Barson is a Senior Lawyer at the Human Rights Law Centre. She has worked as a senior policy lawyer at the Centre for Innovative Justice (under former attorney general Rob Hulls). Ruth has worked as a criminal lawyer for Victorian Legal Aid. She spent a number of years working for the Aboriginal Legal Services in the Northern Territory. Ruth worked in Alice Springs, leading projects to establish and maintain Aboriginal courts in specific remote communities. In Darwin, Ruth worked as an advocacy lawyer, focusing on parole and prisoner rights. Ruth is currently on the board of Womens Legal Service Victoria. She has a Masters of International Human Rights Law from Oxford University.
