World Environment Day

Untitled-2

Hi FoEC'ers and friends,

It was just a few weeks ago that we were planting and we are at it again.
We have a Moreland City Council sponsored event this time around which is why we are not at our usual FoEC third Sunday of the month. The time is also a lot earlier too...

Next event

Sunday 4 June 2017, 10.00am - 12.30pm
Planting: World Environment Day Planting at the new Edgars Creek parkland wetlands: an event with Moreland City Council and other local ‘Friends’ groups; Celebrating World Environment Day.
Hosted by the Moreland City Council (MCC) (Phone Vince/Lori [MCC] on

Meet at the new wetlands – access from the Coburg Basketball Stadium, Outlook Road, North Coburg.
See you on the creek,
David.

Pear and Ginger Cake

Untitled-2

Hi Newlanders.

I made this cake for last week's working bee at Newlands Primary School and everyone wanted the recipe so I thought I'd share it with the whole neighbourhood!

Pear and Ginger Cake

Topping:

80g butter
110g brown sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2 pears, peeled and sliced

Cake batter:

2220g golden syrup
170g yoghurt (or sour cream)
100g brown sugar
2 eggs
280g melted butter
2 tsp grated fresh ginger
1/2 lemon zest, finely grated
90g plain flour
130g self raising flour
40g semolina
2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder

Method:

Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Line the bottom of a loaf tin with baking paper. To make the topping, melt butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir in brown sugar and salt until combined. Place mixture in tin and arrange pear pieces on top.

For cake batter, whisk together golden syrup, yoghurt, brown sugar and eggs. Add melted butter and whisk to combine. Add grate ginger and lemon zest. Stir well.

In a separate bowl, sift flours, semolina, ground ginger, salt and baking powder together and fold through golden syrup mixture.

Pour batter into tin, over the topping. Tap tin to remove any air bubbles. Bake for 50 minutes or until cooked. Remove from oven, cool and then tip out. Very yummy served cream.

Prune in June

Untitled-2

A group of lemon-loving locals have stepped up their fight against the native gall wasp, launching a campaign asking Melburnians to Prune in June.

The tiny wasp, which is native to northern New South Wales and Queensland, lays its eggs in the branches of citrus trees, causing bulging lumps called gall.
Save Our Citrus Melbourne was formed last year by two gardeners concerned about the spread of gall in Melbourne's lemon trees.
Co-founder Kaye Roberts-Palmer said they were initially focused on their local council area of Darebin, but soon expanded their sights to the whole of Melbourne.
"We did a few talks and we were amazed by the interest — it's just grown and grown," she said.

Lemon trees 'important to Melbourne culture'

The group has launched a Prune in June campaign, which includes online videos aimed at teaching people how and when to prune their citrus trees.
Ms Roberts-Palmer said that along with olive trees, lemon trees were "Melbourne icons".
"I think they're really important to Melbourne culture; along with the footy, along with the coffee, I think they're something that should survive and thrive," she said.
Ms Roberts-Palmer said a lemon tree she saw at a friend's rental property was an example of what could happen when gall-infected branches were not pruned.
"It looks like the tree has cancer ... it is very depressing," she said.
"The good news is that citrus trees are a very hardy species."
Older trees with extensive root systems can be cut right back and still survive, she said.

Pruning in June stops gall spreading.

Ms Roberts-Palmer said it was important to prune citrus trees while the weather was still cold.
"We really want everyone to get out in June and prune their citrus trees," she said.
"In the winter months the citrus gall wasp is still dormant, and so what we can do as gardeners is get out there and cut off the galls."
She said the gall wasps would spread if owners waited until spring to prune.
"The wasps start hatching and flying around," she said.
Pruned galls should be soaked in water for two weeks, then bagged and thrown in the rubbish.

Videos, workshops teach citrus owners how to prune.

Ms Roberts-Palmer said learning how to prune citrus correctly was crucial to maintaining a healthy tree.
"When you're cutting into the tree, you're actually wounding the tree," she said.
The group's instructional videos show viewers what a gall looks like and how to prune it off the tree.
Along with the videos, Save Our Citrus is conducting a series of how-to prune workshops throughout June.
Ms Roberts-Palmer said controlling the spread of gall in Melbourne would take several years of concerted effort.
"There's no natural predator in Victoria that's going to affect this gall wasp," she said.
"It's really about us all getting together and pruning."
A list of workshops times and venues is available on the Save Our Citrus Melbourne Facebook page.

This Saturday June 3rd 1-3pm, first Saturday of the month as always, we will be planting into the Patch (Connolly Avenue, South of Murray Road Bridge), Murnongs (Yam daisies), Bulbines Lilies and for the first time some Blue Grass Lilies, which all are edible species. Some bits and pieces too left over from last month. So a bit for every one.
All this in preparation of the Murnong Gathering that happens in November - this year will be our 9th!!! Really exciting that, all things going well, we will be able to taste some Blue Grass Lilies on top of the "usual fare" of Murnongs and Bulbines.
BUT, for all this to happen we need you, lovely community that turns up to the Murnong Gathering, to also turn up this Saturday to help as well as (If you can't make Saturday or both) to put your best foot forward to become Murnong foster carers - no skills required, just care. Support provided.
Indeed, we will be potting up some Murnongs in styro boxes to fatten up for eating in November after roasting them in the earth ovens.
So, fancy fostering some fattening Murnong? We need carers for the boxes until November.... info and support provided. Come to this Saturday's activity or contact Meccarg via https://www.facebook.com/meccarg/?ref=page_internal

We look forward to see you Saturday.

Rooster and hens - Pekins and pekin X silkies.

We let our broody hen raise some chicks last summer and they are now all grown up. Amazingly we only got two roosters from our clutch of 9 but now that they’re approaching 5 month old the time has come for us to part with the two boys plus several of the girls. Some are pure bread Buff Pekins, some are Pekin X Silkie (but look very much more like Pekin’s than Silkies). We also have three Aracana hens from the same brood and are wiling to part with one. We’d like to sell the hens (who are all point-of-lay) for $25 each. If you can give one of the roosters a good home you can have a hen for free. They are nice boys who have been raised as pets and are very attractive and not aggressive… but there is the small issue of crowing. One has just started.

Located in Preston. Call or text 0400 123 336.
