Free shelving!

This is the old pigeon hole shelving system from Newlands Primary School.
It is in pretty good condition and is no longer needed because the staff have a new staff room.
It is quite solid and heavy and is made out of MDF.
If you would like it, it's all yours!
We have a ute and can deliver it if that would suit you better.
Give Mel a call on 0404 043 010 if you're interested.
I included the photo so you can see that it about as tall as Bronte!

Very easy lemon yoghurt cake.

Hi Folks.
We shared this cake at a celebration last week at Newlands Primary and it went down a treat!
It is a very good use of the abundance of lemons around at the moment!!!

Ingredients:

2 lemons, rind, grated finely
1 cup (250ml) oil
2 eggs
1.5 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup natural yoghurt
3 tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice
2 cups self raising flour

1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees and flour a 23cm cake tin.

2. Grate all the peel from the lemons into a mixing bowl. Add the oil, eggs and sugar, beat with a beater until thick and well blended.

3. Add the salt, yoghurt and lemon juice and beat again briefly to mix well. Fold in the flour.

4. Pour the cake mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 30-40 minutes.

5. Leave to cool in tin for about 10 minutes before turning carefully out on to a cooling rack.

Enjoy!!!!

Amelia's Miso Soup!

Hi Folks.
I would like to get in the habit of sharing recipes via the blog so I thought I would start off with my favourite miso soup recipe that Amelia shared with me.
Thank you Amelia!

Pop a splash each of sesame oil and olive oil in a saucepan and then add celery and spring onion. Cook for a bit.
Then chop up some tofu and fry it off with some tamari.
Then add some other chopped up veggies (I like carrot, mushroom, zucchini). Pop a lid on and sweat these for about 5 minutes.
Add boiling water and finely chopped ginger and garlic.
Boil for 5-10 minutes.
Scoop out some juice and mix it with a big spoonful of miso paste (my favourite is shiro paste).
Pop back in the pan, be careful not to boil from here on in and add tamari and lemon juice to taste!!!

Enjoy.
Cheers Mel.

Housemate wanted

Hi All,
I am seeking a new housemate to share my cosy 2br home in Newlands, south of Murray Rd.
The room is currently occupied so it will be avail in a few weeks from now (19/7/12).
There's me - female, 55, tragically still living her 25yo lifestyle.
There's also an aged dog (palliative care stage), and a cat in her prime and they are both part of the household. I have 3 chooks too, but they aren't allowed in the house. Much to their chagrin.
The house is lawn free: lots of fruit trees, and space for food growing - I could do more!
The room is north facing onto the back garden and is lightly furnished (everything except a bed actually), but if you have your own furniture, that's ok too.
10 - 15 mins walk through the park to Bell St No1 tram. 1 min to Merri Bike path.
$200pw inc bills & inet

So, if you or someone you know is interested:
can be short or long term
must be someone who wants to share in the cooking, cleaning, society of the house and garden
must be environmentally, politically and socially aware (preferably of a similar bent to me of course!)
up for negotiating our sharing arrangements
are working or student or otherwise getting on with doing something...

I'd love to hear from you!
Mez (0435 875 100)

Reminder!

Howdy Folks.
The blog seems to be working really well and so far I have only heard good feedback!!
I would like to officially thank Janet for setting up such a great system. It is a really wonderful community resource that we can all access anytime! Janet, you are awesome.
I think it's worth reminding everyone how to use the blog and get the most out of it.
The most important thing is that if you post something via the email address newlandscommunitynews@gmail.com you need to check the comments on the blog. This is especially important if you don't leave your contact details in the post.
Please spread the word and share the community love!!!!
In other excellent news did you see page 5 of The Age on Tuesday???
High School for Coburg in Coburg 2015. Thank you to Cate Hall, another awesome local lady!
Cheers Mel.

Blood Donation.

Hi Everyone.
One of our lovely local families has recently been dealing with their youngest daughters leukaemia diagnosis. They are a beautiful family and their lives have been turned upside down.
When asked what we could do to help, we were asked to spread the word about donating blood.
The amount of blood that is used to help keep people alive is astounding and stocks are always quite low.
If you have ever considered donating blood, now is a great time!
You can find out more info here http://www.donateblood.com.au/

Background
Newlands kids get creative with mosaics

A project idea has been submitted, on behalf of Newlands Primary for the Leader Local Grants program.  Every local paper will have a grant of $1,000 available for the idea that gets the most votes.

Our idea is for each grade 6 student to leave a creative legacy of their contribution and time at Newlands.  They would create a mosaic and include it as a permanent piece in the school grounds.  The mosaic will be assembled within a tyre and act as stepping stones, providing a valuable opportunity for active play for students, as well as a strong visual as part of the garden design. It will be nice to have the mosaics in the garden to remind us of our lovely grade 6s for years to come!

Other students will also be able to participate in creating smaller mosaic pieces.

Friends of Edgars Creek planting.

Hi FoEC members and Friends,

A quick note to remind everyone about our planting activity this Sunday from 1-3 PM (from around 11-11.30 AM we will be on site if you want to join us earlier).
We are working on an extension of the Silurian cliff site, east side of the creek just north of the Kodak bridge. Site access is easiest from Ronald St, though boots are certainly recommended.

We will be planting primarily grasses and smaller plants into a large area of jute mat that was laid out last week by Rob, Stephen and me.
I look forward to creating the transition that we have planned for this area; and also your company on the day.
Forecast is a partly cloudy day and top of 14 degrees.

Kind regards,
David Pavone
FoEC President.

Free vacuum!

Hi everyone,

We have a 2-3 year old Airflo bagless vacuum cleaner to send to a new home. It's in fine working condition, but we've found with two asthmatic boys and two dogs it just didn't quite have the power we needed.

We still have the box and the instructions.

Contact me at melaniejoymcgrath@yahoo.com.au if you'd like it.

Knitting assistance.

Hi.
I've just started knitting again after a hiatis of 22 years. I'm knitting a jumper for my son Jack to take on his travels to Russia at the end of the year. The pattern has a cable in it and I was wondering if there is anyone in the neighbourhood that I could check with that I am going about things in the right way. Hoping I could catch up with you latter this week after work. Thanks

Free wooden cot and/or cradle.

Hello Everyone.
Our Bronte has just moved into a bed and no one in our family needs a cot or a cradle any longer.
The cot comes with a firm mattress, is made of wood and is nice and big.
The cradle comes with a foam mattress, is made of wood, is on wheels and is a square shape, it can also  rock from side to side.
They are both in good condition and have been in our family for the last 8 years, each of our three kids used them.
If you or anyone you know needs either of these please let me know. I have a ute and can deliver them.
Cheers Mel.

Ride to Pool Day....

Hi Everyone.
Even though the weather is freezing and you could probably think of nothing worse than swimming in our local outdoor pool........ Friends of Coburg Pool are starting to organise our annual Ride to Pool Day (set to be held early 2013).
We are really hoping to promote the 'riding' aspect of the day and we are looking to make links with bicycle groups to help with this. We are also looking for musicians to play on the day and volunteers to help run the day.
If you or anyone you know would like to help us with our next Ride to Pool Day please contact Mel on melmate@hotmail.com.
If the weather is good we normally get around 1000 people coming along.
It is a wonderful celebration of our local outdoor pool.
