We have two free community events coming up, brought to you by Neighbours United for Climate Action, taking place at the Newlands Neighbourhood House

Come lend us your voice for a fun afternoon of SINGING FOR CHANGE!

This event will kick off our final season of the Community Climate Action Series (CCAS) 2022 - a season of REJOICING.  What better way to do that than with the power of song.  Leading us will be local parent, musician and activist, Phil Hudson (Black Sheep Music) who will guide us through a song writing process, exploring the power of music to bring us together to take meaningful climate action in the community.  Kids will be part of the process so please bring the whole family!

And remember - EVERYONE can sing!  Absolutely no experience or hidden talent is necessary.  This is all about the joy, creativity, togetherness and literally raising our voices for the planet and her inhabitants.  

A Zero Waste Festive Crafternoon/End of Year Party!

Come and join us for the grand finale in our free Community Climate Action Series. Get yourself prepared for the end of year and/or Christmas festivities that don't cost the Earth!  We'll have a range of craft projects for festive decorations and gifts to get stuck into!  If you have any fabulous zero-waste festive ideas, please bring them along to share with the group. 

As this is our finale for 2022, this session will also be an opportunity to celebrate together the year that was - and the many achievements of our wonderful community when it comes to the fight for our planet and her inhabitants.  Expect plenty of food, fun, laughter, and to be inspired by some local good news stories.

You are invited to join us for a co-created, arts-based, reimagining of community; what we are and what we can be. A free event, designed for all ages, with afternoon tea and beloved local artist Sofia Sabbagh.

This workshop is based in the realm of dreaming and imagining. Using collaborative, arts-based exercises we will deconstruct and reconstruct what constitutes our community - the places, people, things and beliefs - forming new perspectives, connections, and a greater understanding of our co-imagined future. Doco & Soup Night - screening 'Lady Lash'

A family friendly movie night! Join us to eat a nourishing bowl of soup and watch the short documentary 'Lady Lash'. Directed and Produced by local Rochelle ‘Rocky’ Humphrey, Co-produced by Crystal Clyne (aka Lady Lash).

This film celebrates "the power of creativity against adversity aiming to dilute Australia's negative media of Aboriginal women and the lack of real representation with personal stories. This film challenges the colonial mindset that destruction of 'country' is worth the profits it generates" -Documentary Australia.

This is a FREE EVENT, however we will be welcoming donations to fundraise for their new documentary, ‘Native Title Rockets’ a 3D hybrid documentary exposing the new space defence strategy that is launching rockets on Kokatha country and threatening women’s sacred sites. Community Climate Action

A facilitated conversation in which participants will reflect on their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and cultures and explore what white privilege is, what it means to belong to a dominant culture, what racism is and explore underlying beliefs and values. Sue Dwyer (a long-time volunteer with Climate for Change) has taken up her pen (or keyboard) and picked up her phone many times to ensure her MP knows what's important to her, and she's mentored and supported others to do the same. She has some great stories to tell of the power of this kind of engagement as well as practical tips to get you started.

This is also a great chance to connect with others and maybe even form a letter-writing group (which makes things more fun).

Community Climate Action Series

Hi, Newlanders.

Next up in our Community Climate Action Series (normally at the neighbourhood house but currently via zoom) we have the following fun offering:

Winter mending and sock-repurposing (FB event here and zoom registration here) THIS SATURDAY (25TH JULY) 2PM.

Here’s your chance to learn needle felting - an amazingly fast and simple method for your woollens. Give your old (moth-hole ridden) favourites a new life and new character with the help of Mary Ellen Jordan from Newfangled Mending. We’ll also be turning our collective attention to all those lone and holey socks that accumulate in most households. Local sock-repurposing-enthusiast Pascale has plenty of ideas to share and would also love to hear any you have. Bring your socks and ideas along, either online or in a real room and we’ll attempt a spot of lone-sock speed dating; you never know, there could be a match.

***SPECIAL NOTE ON WHAT TO HAVE ON HAND FOR THIS SESSION***
This session will include an opportunity for you to practice needle-felting and get advice on any mending projects you have in mind or are in progress. We therefore recommend you have the following things on-hand to get the most out of it:

• Needle-felting needle, foam and un-spun wool (NB. We have made up some kits of these items to facilitate you getting started with needle felting. Kits will be only $3 and available for contactless local pick up in Preston or Coburg North from Monday 20th July - message Nina on 0400123336 for pick up address details).
• One or more woollen items you would like to either work on or discuss during the session.

Please also have on-hand a collection of odd and/or damaged socks for the sock-focussed part of this session. We would love you to also share your own ideas so if you have an example of sock re-purposing please bring it (or a photo of it).
