In 2015 the Preston Branch of Bendigo Bank established Preston Connected Community, a not-for-profit association, for the benefit of the City of Darebin, particularly Preston residents. 

With small grants, our association supports local not-for-profit community groups. See the website for examples of projects we have supported. Many local organisations have been able to accomplish significant projects with our help.

Our association is a hub, investing in projects which strengthen our community, often in innovative ways, to encourage and benefit us all where we work and live.

Moreland Microgrants

These microgrants cover registration fees for selected Fringe artists living, or presenting their Fringe show, in the Moreland Local Government Area. Works that are both by Moreland-based artists, and that are to be presented in Moreland will be considered, with a preference for work that fulfil both criteria. So if you live in Brunswick, Brunswick East, Brunswick West, Coburg, Coburg North, Fawkner, Glenroy, Gowanbrae, Hadfield, Oak Park, Pascoe Vale, and Pascoe Vale South, apply now.

Festivals Moreland Development Program

The Festivals Moreland Development Program will support the creation of new live art or participatory works to be showcased as part of the Coburg Carnivale during the 2017 Melbourne Fringe Festival. The Program will support up to four projects through a financial contribution of $5000, provide rehearsal space, as well as marketing and technical support, not to mention we’ll help you produce your work!

PROMOTING HEALTH AND FITNESS AT SYDNEY ROAD COMMUNITY SCHOOL

The health and wellbeing of our students at Sydney Road Community School, a small government school in Brunswick, has always been a priority for us. Recent data collected from students showed a serious lack of physical activity in their lives. The aim of this idea would be to give students an opportunity to improve their overall fitness and health in a fun way by participating in classes run by the YMCA. Also to introduce them to a valuable community resource that they may use in the future.

Moreland Celebrating Place Grants Program

Applications for Moreland City Council’s Celebrating Place Grants Program are now open and everyone’s invited to apply!

The Celebrating Place Grants Program provides support for community groups to organise an event or celebration that connects people in new and interesting ways and enriches the social life of Moreland’s community. It especially aims to recognise and celebrate the contribution of Moreland’s smaller groups and organisations, and the role they play in forming the building blocks of a connected and engaged community.

Events might involve music, food, sustainability or the arts. They may celebrate unique aspects of culture or bring together people in the many public places in our community. It could be a small project or a big one. Ideas for applications should seek to entertain, inspire and promote active community participation. Festivals and events delivered in areas which have limited arts or community activities provided by Council are especially welcome!

Grants to the value of $3000 and $5000 are available to help not-for-profits and community groups based in Moreland put on events, festivals and celebrations.

We will be holding a number information sessions at the Coburg Civic Centre for anyone wanting more information:

·         Tuesday 2 February at 5.30pm

·         Wednesday 3 February at 1.30pm

·         Tuesday 8 March at 10.30am and

·         Thursday 10 March at 5.30pm 

As part of the Celebrating Place Grants program we are also offering mentorship opportunities for groups requiring further advice and support on aspects of their proposed event. Mentorship applications need to be forwarded to cpgrants@moreland.vic.gov.auby Friday 12 February 2016 and more information can be found here.

2014 Cultural Exchange Grant - Voiceless Journeys

As recipient of the 2014 Cultural Exchange Grant Moreland City Council is pleased to present Voiceless Journeys at various sites across the Moreland municipality in March and April.

A powerful exhibition by the organization Ondru Voiceless Journeys is a project that celebrates cultural diversity and combats racism through portraiture photography and storytelling.

The project was developed in 2012 by arts organisation Ondru to raise awareness about the journey and achievements of people who have left their countries as a result of conflict.

The exhibition has been displayed in the cities of Darebin, Whitehorse and around Melbourne. The Moreland installation of Voiceless Journeys will be displayed in both indoor and outdoor sites across Coburg during March and April of 2014. The outdoor spaces will include the front of the Coburg Library and in Dunns Lane, Coburg. In addition to this, an exhibition of the Voiceless Journeys project and its history will be displayed in the Coburg Town Hall Arts Space.

The Voiceless Journeys project has been funded by the Cultural Exchange Initiative Grant with support from The Coburg Initiative.

Who: 15 - 30 COMMITTED volunteers to help bring the exhibition to life

How: Volunteers will participate in preparation and pasting of a number of large scale Voiceless Journeys portraits. No experience necessary and all training is provided.

The Unity Through Partnerships grants program is a cultural grant opportunity with a focus on festivals: 

The Unity Through Partnerships Grants Program opened on 13 January 2014, and will close on 28 February 2014. 

Administered by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship, the Unity Through Partnerships Grants Program provides funding of up to $100,000 for projects undertaken in partnership by two or more of Victoria’s diverse ethnic, cultural and religious communities, culminating in a public festival, event or gathering that:
·        fosters cross-cultural connections by encouraging community organisations from different cultural, religious and linguistic backgrounds to work in partnership on a joint project;
·        showcases the vibrancy of multiculturalism through festivals and/or events that encourage the participation of the whole community;
·        demonstrates the benefits of cultural, linguistic and religious diversity to the broader Victorian community;
·        builds the capacity and experience of participating community organisations through mutual support, skills development, knowledge sharing and mentoring between partnering organisations;
·        develops sustainable relationships between partner organisations with a view to maintaining partnerships after the completion of the project;
·        provides opportunities for meaningful and sustainable participation and engagement of a wide range of Victorians, with emphasis on new and emerging communities or groups currently under-represented in community activities; and
·        promotes education and awareness of racial and religious diversity and acceptance in Victoria.

What funding is available?

The total annual budget of the UTP Grants Program is $1.1 million. Organisations may make applications for up to $100,000. In previous rounds, grants have ranged between $5,000 and $100,000, with an average grant size of approximately $30,000. Applications will be accepted for festivals and/or events that are scheduled to run between 1 July 2014 and 30 June 2015.

Tree Planting at Cox Reserve

With the new development on its way up at Coburg Hill we are going to see a huge rise in traffic along Elizabeth St. We want to plant lots of shrubby trees along the fence line to provide a buffer between the traffic and the park. Background

Newlands kids get creative with mosaics

A project idea has been submitted, on behalf of Newlands Primary for the Leader Local Grants program.  Every local paper will have a grant of $1,000 available for the idea that gets the most votes.  

Our idea is for each grade 6 student to leave a creative legacy of their contribution and time at Newlands.  They would create a mosaic and include it as a permanent piece in the school grounds.  The mosaic will be assembled within a tyre and act as stepping stones, providing a valuable opportunity for active play for students, as well as a strong visual as part of the garden design. It will be nice to have the mosaics in the garden to remind us of our lovely grade 6s for years to come!

Other students will also be able to participate in creating smaller mosaic pieces.
