Meeting with Peter Khalil

Following the success of the School Strike for Climate, a group of high school and primary school student are meeting with our local MP Peter Khalil to discuss their concerns around climate change. 

The meeting will be held at Khalil's office at 3, Munro St Coburg, next Tuesday the 11th of December from 5.30pm-6pm. Any school-aged children are welcome to join for the meeting, and a crafternoon session on Monday the 10th from 5.30pm - 6.30pm at the Coburg Library.

Invitation: Moreland Community Against the East West Tunnel (MCAT) - Thurs 23 January

Hi everyone.

Sorry for late invitation.

The next meeting of MCAT (Moreland Community against the (East West) Tunnel will be:

Thursday 23 January, 6.30pm @ the Temple Park Senior Citizens Centre (also known as the Trugo Club), eastern side of Temple Park.
If you haven't been to meetings here, you can walk up Wilson St from the Jewell Station to the park.

Some ideas which will be discussed are: a family picnic at Holbrook Reserve (which will be destroyed by the East West Link) in the lead-up to a rally in a central location in Moreland; an action at the zoo to highlight how the zoo animals will be effected, stalls in various parts of  Moreland, we will also be discussing how to win the support of unions to stop the East West Link.

Can you help staff a stall to get the word out about the impact of the East-West Link?

We are planning to have stalls on Saturday 1 February and Saturday 8 February. Over the next few weeks, we would like to do stalls at Union Square shopping centret; Barkly Square shops. Coburg Mall and other parts of Moreland.

Support the pickets

Many Moreland residents have been regularly supporting the pickets to stop the drilling for the East West Tunnel. The Linking Melbourne Authority has notified Yarra council that they want to drill at 14 sites.

The aim of the pickets is to delay the project enough to force the governement to take the project to the election.

What changes do you want made to Coburg Planning Amendment C123? 

Guest speaker: Dr Michael Buxton (Professor Environment and Planning, School of Global Studies, Social Science and Planning, RMIT University) will speak about new zoning and planning laws in Melbourne, how they will impact on Coburg. 

Michael will speak at the beginning of the meeting and will inform the discussions that follow. We will then discuss and agree on motions that we as a residents group will put forward to councillors prior to their voting on planning amendment C123.

Sue Bolton is one of our new councillors - a Moreland Councilor of the North East ward.
She is hardworking and has hastily called a public meeting for next Thursday in Coburg to let you all know about the future plans for the planning of the Centre of Coburg.

Stop over-development horror in Coburg
Do you want 10-storey buildings around the Coburg shops?
Do you want 10-storey buildings to back onto residential properties?
Do you want to lose your right to object to high rise buildings around
the Coburg shops?
Do you want the Coburg shops to become a concrete jungle like a
mini-CBD?
The Moreland Council has been discussing plans to develop the Coburg shops as a
principle activity centre — like a mini CBD with 6-storey, 8-storey and 10-storey
buildings — a concrete jungle.
There are planning amendments on display at the Coburg Town Hall and on the
council website. Residents have only until Thursday January 31 to make a public
submission on these amendments. There is a structure plan for 10-storey buildings along both sides of Bell Street from Sydney Road to a block west of the railway line, creating a tunnel effect.
Residents also discovered that if the council adopts the planning amendment they
would lose their right to object to development applications in the Coburg shopping
centre and along Syndey Road. 

This is totally undemocratic.
Residents want the time for public submissions to be extended because many residents
don’t know what is being planned for their suburb.
The developers shouldn’t be deciding how to develop our suburb. Residents should
be the ones who decide what sort of developments are right for our suburb.
