Newlands Friends of the Forest are excited that Adrian Whitehead has agreed to come and give a presentation on the successful campaign to stop the clearfell logging of the native forests in the Otway Ranges. We will also discuss the relevance of these learnings for the current issues of the clearfelling of other Victorian Native Forests.

Campaign

Melbourne Zoo have a new campaign about the danger of balloons to seabirds. Balloons that are released outside end up in the sea, where they are swallowed by birds and other wildlife.

"The CSIRO (2016) recently outlined balloons to be in the top three most harmful pollutants threatening marine wildlife."

The campaign is asking people to make a promise to use an alternative to balloons at their next event.

Pathway

Dear neighbours, for those of you who like me used to enjoy walking, playing or gazing upon the open grassland beside the Coburg Pool we now have a 2-3 metre wide path running through it. Bike paths are good -- I'm a cyclist myself -- but do they need to be everywhere? In any case, I called the council and apparently there was no community consultation engaged for this stretch of concrete.

First of all I'm a mum with 4 beautiful little girls, I had them relatively young and was forced to grow up pretty fast.

Over the course of my life I've had this nagging voice saying 'music... Muuuuuuussssiiiic' I never knew exactly what that meant but over the last few years its been getting especially LOUD! 

So in the gaps between being with the girls (nights!) I've been singing and writing and gigging and somehow finding myself playing around Melbourne with an amazing group of extremely talented musicians.

I Victorian Planning Panel Hearing on East West Link Started Monday 3 March 2014

 

Today Monday 3 March 2014 was a very memorable day in the battle for our parks in particular Royal Park.. Mr. Tom Pikusa - counsel for our two groups, namely Protectors of Public Lands Victoria Inc. and the Royal Park Protection Group Inc., made a brilliant submission at the opening of the Victorian Planning Panel hearing enquiring into the East West Link.

 

I am attaching the summary of his presentation. Please advise if you would like me to supply you with a copy of Tom's power point presentation which includes stunning photos of Royal Park by David Tattnall and extraordinary 3D artists impressions produced by the program proponent - Linking Melbourne Authority - of the East West Link spaghetti junctions, vent stacks and aerial overpasses proposed for Royal Park. (This file is a bit large being 11 mb so I have not circulated it.

 

Attached again is the timetable of the hearing. We would like some support at the hearings. Make yourself known to us if you attend!       

 

Attached also is the flier on the David Tatnall exhibition. The launch is on 11 March 2014 at 5 pm at the "fortyfivedownstairs gallery." All those determined to save Royal Park are  invited!

The Gift of Refuge

“The Gift of Refuge” Pilgrimage from Brunswick to Canberra

With a little help from his friends, Tri Nguyen is planning a pilgrimage from Brunswick Baptist Church to Canberra to deliver a gift to Parliament: a boat.  It is a model of the boat in which he and his father and sister fled Vietnam in 1982.  The boat has been put on wheels and will be pulled behind walkers.

Tri and his family would like to say "thank you" to Australia for the gift of refuge, hospitality and care that they received as refugees in Australia.  This is also an opportunity to express solidarity with the millions of refugees in the world, and with friends who are seeking asylum in Australia.

The walk will also raise funds for Baptcare’s Sanctuary facilities in Brunswick and Preston, which provide supported accommodation for over 70 asylum seekers. 

We plan to begin the walk on the 16th of March with a walk up Sydney Road with the aim of finishing in Canberra on April 20th (Easter).

We invite churches and community groups along the route to join us in the walk and in planning awareness raising events in the local towns.

We will begin the walk with a launch at Brunswick Baptist Church on March 16^th and walk together from there up Sydney Road to Dallas.

With your help, we’ll start by getting the attention of MPs around the country. We want to make sure that their ears are finely tuned to the issue of housing affordability for the rest of this week.

Your task today is to call your local Member of Parliament and engage them in a discussion about house prices and high rents.

We want you to speak freely about your own experiences and opinions, but for those who want some pointers there are some discussion starters on the document attached here.

To help you find the relevant contact information, you can download a list of MPs by following this link.

If you are not sure which electorate you live in, you can find out through the Australian Electoral Commission website.

MPs can be very busy, so they might not be available at the time that you call. If that happens, you can ask to leave a message saying that you called to discuss the housing crisis request a call back at a time that is more suitable.

URGENT UPDATE: The final countdown for Hazelwood? Please, take action now.

Right now, we are on the verge of a historic opportunity to Replace Hazelwood, Australia’s dirtiest power station, with clean energy. Environment Victoria supporters have been campaigning to Replace Hazelwood for many years, and finally the chance is within our reach.

But now, the negotiations to close Hazelwood are under threat. We’ve teamed up with Change.org to get this critical campaign over the line in its final weeks. Will you take urgent action now?

Hazelwood is Australia’s dirtiest power station. It’s responsible for almost 15 percent of Victoria’s and 3 percent of Australia’s greenhouse pollution all on its own.

The Federal Government is currently in negotiations with the owners of Hazelwood and other polluting power stations to close down three of these big polluters. The negotiation deadline is 30 June – just over five weeks away. But recent media reports suggest that the government might walk away from the negotiation table – leaving Hazelwood and other power stations polluting for decades to come.

Unless the government receives pressure from people across the country this crucial moment to Replace Hazelwood, cut pollution, and bring online clean renewable energy could be lost.

We know that Australians want to cut pollution and we need to show that people from across Australia want to Replace Hazelwood. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Change.org, one of the fastest growing campaign organisations in the world. Together with Change, and one of our passionate supporters, Anna Cutler, we’re building a massive petition to tell our government to close the deal on Hazelwood.
