City of Voices

Kaleidoscope has been created and written by the City of Voices ensemble throughout 2025 through a series of devising workshops, exploring the theme of rule-breaking and the power of saying no.  The performance has been designed to be accessible to all members of the community, and has a range of accessibility features including audio-described and low-sensory performances, including a break-out room.

Fri 15th and Sat 16th March, 2pm and 7pm Melbourne Playback is thrilled to be collaborating with emerging theatre company SKY Theatre in this double bill of: The Amplifiers (SKY Theatre) and  Live Large (Melbourne Playback with SKY Theatre) The Amplifiers is a 30 minute devised show, following three students of magic who face demons, curses and major headaches of bureaucracy. SKY Theatre is an ensemble of skilled theatre-makers on the autism spectrum who bring their inside experience to an adventure packed with spells, suits, Lebanese drumming and a touch of glam rock. In Live Large, Melbourne Playback ensemble is joined by SKY Theatre performers in a playback show exploring the audience's experience of overcoming obstacles, going beyond ability into the essential things that connect us all. Awoken

Nick’s self-contained melancholy existence is cracked open when he is asked to read stories to his niece. He finds himself encountering a malingering sultan, a swashbuckling prince and an ominous siren of the deep. The character of Nick himself suddenly seems far less fixed.

April Underhill: Toothfairy is a theatre show for children 3-8years playing at La Mama Theatre, Faraday St, Carlton during THE FIRST WEEK of the school holidays September 20 -28th.

11am and 2pm each day.

It is directed by local theatre artist Vanessa Chapple and is a magical story with performers and puppetry adapted from the ward winning book by Bob Graham.

Newlands Primary School Trivia Night

Hi Folks.
Newlands Primary School are holding a trivia night on Friday October 26 at the Kastoria Club up the top of Elizabeth St. It is looking like being an excellent evening and we hope to get lots of locals along. I have a feeling it is not going to be a 'run of the mill' trivia night.

If you can't get together a table of 10, you can be put on a table with others.

Indian Dance Performance - for Oxfam's Sustainable Mining Campaign

Darpana: The Mirror of Gesture

I would like to invite you to, Darpana: The Mirror of Gesture, a performance of classical South Indian dancing to raise funds for Oxfam Australia’s Sustainable Mining campaign.

I learn a style of classical South Indian dancing known as Bharata Natyam, from Dr. Chandrabhanu’s Bharatalaya Academy of Indian Dance. It is an ancient dance style derived from the temple dancers of South India and involves a demi-plies position and the striking of the feet to weave rhythms. Gold bells are worn around the ankles and costumes are weaved from silk and gold with traditional adornments on the head, neck and arms. Sets for this show are painted by renowned Australian artist, the late Geoffrey Goldie.

The dances we will perform depict deities of Hindu mythology and this particular performance comprises 7 dances pertaining to the stories of Lord Krishna, Ganesha, the 10 incarnations of Vishnu (Dasavataram) and Shiva. My sister and I have come together for this show to celebrate our love for dance and to raise funds for a great cause.

The performance will be held at the Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre, Friday June 15th at 7:30pm. Tickets are $30 full, $25 concession and seniors. Further details are in the flyer attached.

Everynight Everynight - production by Frank Theatre Company

Would it be possible to send this out to the email list? I've never sent anything out to your grand network before, but hopefully it's the kind of thing people are interested in! - -

I'd like to let you all know about the first production from the new Frank Theatre Company. They have revived Ray Mooney's Everynight Everynight - a play that tells one story of the brutality inflicted on prisoners in Pentridge Prison's H division in the 70s. 

This play is very rarely performed by professional theatre companies, in part because of its graphic violence and seriously full-on language. But if you like your theatre confronting and thought provoking, it is very definitely worth seeing. It also represents an aspect of our local history that should not be forgotten as the bluestone walls slowly morph into something more benign.

The Age have reviewed it favorably, as have other outlets.
