Reconciliation Gathering - on the Merri Creek.  

National Reconciliation Week 2021.

Local Event Sunday 30th May - 10:30 am - 2:00 pm.   

The program includes Welcome (Tanderrum) from Wurundjeri Elders, the Djirri Djirri Dancers singing to Country, as well as talks.

This local Coburg site we gather on has a long history for Wurundjeri (pre-colonization) and their cultural practice has been rejuvenated over the short 13+ years, Wurundjeri have been celebrating/sharing a deeper relationship of place with the local community. We gather with a deep appreciation for Wurundjeri generosity and support. We invite you to participate and experience this place of relationship. 

The theme of Reconciliation Week 2021 is - More than a word. Reconciliation takes action. We encourage you to represent the community and wear your pride and resolve, as you join us to connect with Wurundjeri for this Reconciliation week event

Thank you to the Newlands Primary School for their support in looking after some Murnong Boxes this year. This year’s Murnong Gathering is during NAIDOC week.

Join us for a live streaming session from 'Merri Murnong' in Coburg with Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Elder Uncle Bill Nicholson. Monday 9th November at 3:30pm - 4:30pm.

This year’s NAIDOC week timing coincides with the annual Murnong gathering event. This year is going ahead but will be online.

This live streaming session (from Merri Murnong) will include Welcome to Country and focus on the significance of the Murnong to the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people.

Blooming Fantastic Weeding

Helpers wanted!

Over the next few weeks, 3 of us are taking turns to be on site @ Merri Murrnong (along Merri trail, south of Murray Rd) the following Mondays from 9 - 10 am. 

The site is currently spring blooming with, amongst others, bulbines and chocolate lilies but some unhelpful weeds are trying to do the same. 

It’s a great time to be there – not too cold not too hot.

We’ll be happy to induct you into how we work and with the ecology of Merri Murrnong.

You will target only one type of weed at a time so no prior knowledge required, just willing to help and learn.

We provide tools and freshly brewed native mint. Bring gloves if you need some.

Next Monday (30/9), finish off your weeding by planting something nice. As it is school hols, yes you can bring kids along. There are areas of low diversity where little feet won't be a problem but your work will still be important. We also have a few activities ready for kids.

If you are really keen to learn how to become a weeding custodian of this site but Monday 9 am does not work for you, contact us on bloomingfantasticweeding@gmail.com  and we'll see how we can help you make this happen.

These great people are now regular spontaneous weeders @Merri Murnong.

Here tackling just one weed, chickweed, but uncovering and helping in the process some lovely chocolate lilies and a few other beauties. When they find something interesting they can contact us, and they did.

Community Planting

We are excited to be planting on the opposite side of the creek to the Merri Murnong Patch.

Join the community planting on Saturday at 10 am @  Manna Gum court.

NAIDOC Celebrations

NAIDOC celebrations at Merri Murnong.

Join us 2-3pm, Saturday 13/7.

Free native mint tea.

Last year we celebrated NAIDOC week by starting a “crop” of native millet to begin learning about this important but now rare indigenous food. We also shared some freshly harvested and brewed native mint tea.

This year’s NAIDOC theme is “Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future”.

Treaties are not just pieces of paper but actions towards a just and shared future. Actions at Merri Murnong are often around cultural foods. This year we will experiment with Murnong’s growing conditions.

Come and join us to hear what we learnt so far about native millet, then help us start a companion planting and biochar experiment.
