COMING UP AT THE THORNBURY THEATRE
On Thursday 13th September the Thornbury Theatre is chuffed to be hosting Northcote High Comedy. Comedy is fast becoming a tradition for Northcote High School parents and friends. A fantastic line-up has been released for the 2019 Comedy Night fundraiser, brought to you by the Events and Fundraising sub-committee of School Council. Last year the night raised over $20,000 to support school projects. Fundraising such as this is central to Northcote High School's ability to continue to develop contemporary learning spaces in addition to projects funded by DET. The night will feature well known comics Geraldine Hickey, David Quirk, Monica Dullard, Nath Valvo, Lauren Bok and MC Jodie J Hill. This year, funds raised will target the redevelopment of the Library to create improved study, meeting and social spaces for students.
Melbourne based singer, songwriter and story teller Michael Waugh is touring nationally to launch his fourth album 'The Asphalt & The Oval'. First single “Willy's Chickens” has already received airplay on ABC radio, 3AW and 693AM as well as community radio stations. Teaming up with Waugh is good friend Rich J Davies - a wonderful Melbourne based singer-songwriter who draws from his Scottish upbringing and love of Springsteen in folk-inspired story songs that earned him a nomination at this year's Golden Guitar Awards for his composition “Dirt Under My Nails” (covered by The Bushwackers and nominated for Heritage Song of the Year). Michael Waugh and Rich J Davies play the Thornbury Theatre on Friday 14th September.
INXS - The Australian INXS Show is currently selling out venues across Australia, catch them at the Thornbury Theatre’s Velvet Room on Saturday 15th September. For 20 years, INXS were a perfect blend of new wave/ska and pop rock groove that eventually gave way to a harder and unique style of funk rock, fused with dance elements. Not only had they sold out thousands of venues around the world, received dozens of gold and platinum awards, they were also one of only five Australian bands to boast a US No 1 hit single. They had an endless array of hits including “Need You Tonight”, “Never Tear Us Apart”, “Don't Change”, and “New Sensation”.
Roadies book launch Lunch: To coincide with the publication of Roadies – The Secret History of Australian Rock ‘n Roll by Stuart Coupe, Chugg Entertainment & Support Act are pleased to announce a special lunchtime event at The Thornbury Theatre on Thursday 4th October. During the lunch, Stuart will sit down with legends of the Australian road crew world, Howard Freeman and Geoff Lloyd in Melbourne to recall various tales of life on the road. The world’s first female roadie, Tana Douglas, is flying in from Los Angeles to speak on both panels. All are featured in Stuart’s book, which covers 60 years of Australian music, commencing in 1957. All attendees will receive a signed copy of the book with net proceeds to benefit the Support Act Roadies Fund, which is administered in association with ARCA – The Australian Road Crew Association. During the Melbourne lunch, author Stuart Cope will host acoustic performances and panelists. Acoustic performances will be by Phil Manning and Ross Wilson. This lunch will provide a fantastic insight into the history of Road Crews, as well as raise funds for the mental health of the industry's workhorses. Tickets are $80 for single entry, or a table of 10 for $800.

COMING UP AT THE THORNBURY THEATRE
We have some great shows coming up this month at the Thornbury Theatre.
If you love honky tonk, western swing music and dancing we have a special treat. Emma Bee’s Honky Tonk HQ is hosting a special night in the Velvet Room of the Thornbury Theatre. On Saturday July 7 the Honky Tonk Jubilee features three great dancing bands: James Ellis and the Jealous Guys, the Bakersfield Glee Club and Brooke Russell’s new group the Canyon Callers. Everyone is welcome and the night will start with an easy two-stepping class, with top-up tips between sets. This night is friendly for beginners to learn western swing dancing. Great line up, pull on your best western shirts and skirts. Doors 6.30pm.
The Oliver Shute Big Band comprises 18 of Melbourne's freshest and most talented young musicians from senior secondary schools and tertiary music programs. Playing well known classics tunes by Sammy Nestico, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis alongside contemporary big band charts penned by some of Australia's most well respected composers including Daryl McKenzie, Roger Schmidli and Toshi Clinch. The night will also feature a special guest vocalist and be hosted by passionate jazz enthusiast, drummer and band leader Oliver Shute. This is a wonderful opportunity to support a not-for-profit collective of student musicians who are keen to curate and manage their own unique performance opportunity onMonday July 9 in the Velvet Room of the Thornbury Theatre. Tickets $10.
Singer / songwriter and proud Mutti Mutti man, Kutcha Edwards performs music fusing his beautiful voice with soulful arrangements. Kutcha's deep, rhythmic tones are that of a storyteller whose inspiring songs are passionately heartfelt, evoking an ancient connection to Aboriginal culture. Kutcha can playfully engage with his audience while performing songs that impart his story, his songline. Kutcha has independently produced four CDs, staged two theatre productions and received several prestigious awards including the 2016 Melbourne Prize for Music. Kutcha's magnificent singing, poignancy and humour makes for an unforgettable encounter with one of Australia's indigenous icons and celebrated singer/songwriters. As part of the recent This Place project run by the Darebin Council, Kutcha who has a long history with the local area, wrote a song titled “4ore Walls” about the Thornbury Theatre. Kutcha will be performing with his seven piece group live in the Velvet Room of the Thornbury Theatre onFriday July 13, with special guest Linc Yow Yeh. This is a NAIDOC event.
Australian acoustic blues mastermind Lloyd Spiegel has just released his eighth album ‘Backroads’ and is playing the Thornbury Theatre’sBallroom on Friday July 13. This new album was inspired by Spiegel's life outside of music and reinvents his sound for new audiences, delivering more punch in his most powerful studio performance to date. Lloyd Spiegel has always forged his own path throughout his long career. Spending quite literally his whole life performing, Spiegel blends his grounding in the blues with storytelling and dazzling guitar technique to create a show and signature sound that is launching him onto festival and theatre stages around the globe as a true master of his craft.
When Dublin grieved the early death of Luke Kelly, one of the greatest traditional singers the country has seen, an indelible mark was left upon the city’s folk music scene. To commemorate and celebrate the memory of this Irish music legend Chris Kavanagh will perform The Legend of Luke Kelly at the Thornbury Theatre on Friday July 20. With a remarkable resemblance to Luke Kelly and an immense singing talent that captures the depth and passion of the great man, Chris Kavanagh has been performing to critical acclaim at shows which have been attended regularly by Luke Kelly’s family. Get a taste of what a Luke Kelly performance was all about when Chris Kavanagh brings this striking show to Australia.
Join Jamila Rizvi and Clare Bowditch for an afternoon of honest conversation and song, exploring themes of identity, belonging and the people and places that make us feel like home. This is the third instalment of Tea with Jam and Clare and the girls will be joined by a woman who is briefly returning home, special guest writer, activist and engineer Yassmin Abdul-Magied. Born in Sudan, Yassmin migrated to Australia as a child and recently relocated to the United Kingdom following a hugely tumultuous period in the media spotlight where her Australian identity was repeatedly called into question. Yassmin is a brilliant speaker whose insights into culture, colour and what it is to be a ‘good migrant’ will expand your mind and open your heart. The afternoon will conclude with Clare leading the room in an uplifting group singing adventure. Tea with Jam and Clare will be at the Thornbury Theatre on Sunday July 22, where the seats will be cosy, the tea will be sweet and the room warm and welcoming.
Australia's longest running Motley Crüe tribute band, Shout At The Devil, who arrive on stage with full costumes and makeup from the Shout At The Devil era focus on the American hard rockers’ classic early albums. Expect to hear songs such as Shout At The Devil, Red Hot, Wildside, Take Me to The Top, Live Wire, Ten Seconds Too Love, Looks That Kill and many many more. If you want to see a Motley Crüe tribute band that looks and acts like the real deal then do not miss Shout At The Devil show on Saturday July 28 at the Thornbury Theatre.
Albert Lee, the Grammy winning legendary guitarist for Emmylou Harris and Eric Clapton returns for first Australian shows this decade. He plays the Thornbury Theatre on Thursday August 9 with his crack L.A band providing a masterclass in guitar picking rockabilly country via a living history of rock and roll. Included on Albert’s CV are performances and recordings with Joe Cocker, the Everly Brothers, Keith Urban, Tommy Emmanuel, Dave Edmunds, Willie Nelson, Bill Wyman, Carlene Carter, Jackson Browne, Rosanne Cash, Bert Jansch, Herbie Mann, Keith Richards and Dolly Parton. His live show that kicks off with a blistering rendition of Fat’s Domino’s “I’m Ready” and makes joyous pit stops for classic tunes by Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Hoyt Axton, Buddy Holly, Jimmy Webb and Ray Charles.
