We're looking to have someone install two off-the-shelf outdoor blinds at our rental property in the 'hood. I've tried the one handyman on this site already but he's busy. If anyone has any leads, or fancies taking on the job themselves, pretty please contact me ASAP!

Help Needed
Are you a handy person who knows about lawnmowers?
Recently, a local council bought land with four houses and was planning to demolish them and leave the land empty for 5 years before developing it. A group of charity and not-for-profit organisations in West Heidelberg negotiated with the council to keep the 4 houses to use for people who were homeless rather than demolish them.
With many volunteers and donations we have been able to make all four available for occupancy. In three houses, six children now have a safe, comfortable and relatively spacious place to call home along with their mums. The fourth house is currently home for three adults, two of whom are asylum seekers. We are negotiating with another person who might move in soon.
I work for one of these organisations and run a garden maintenance enterprise for long term unemployed. We have two old lawnmowers which have been donated to us by clients but they are need repairs. We would like to repair them and leave them at the houses so the occupants can maintain their own gardens.
We would love help from a someone that can repair lawnmowers. If they could also train others to do this, this would be very useful for some of the workers involved.
Please text Michaela on 0419 687 467.

Urgent Plant Doctor Needed
Hi,
I have a mulberry tree that I have been growing from a 10cm cutting. The tree is only 2 years old and was doing well until the last few months. It is suffering leaf drop and has developed an abnormality at the base.
I have had one "specialist" come on who obviously didn't know anything about mulberry's and I need someone ASAP. Please see pictures for the issues with the plant.
Please contact Karen if you, or someone you know, can help. Thanks 0439 497 839.

Seeking Assistance
Dear Newlands Community,
Would you have heart or muscle or shed space to assist my dear neighbor?
This weekend she must move from her rental house which is being sold. In this current rental climate, she has been unable to find a rental property for her family (including in deep Thomastown, not near the train).
She is an amazing self-employed, single mother of three children aged 8, 13 and 16 who go to school via train to Collingwood.
What you hear as a growing statistic on the radio, is unfolding next door.
Could you please assist with moving items into storage on Saturday?
Do you have shed space where things could be stored until she finds a home?
Do you have a bungalow they could rent?
At present, the family has a house to sit in Eltham for four weeks.
Any assistance would make an incredible impact on this families situation.
Please contact Jacinta 0431 816 197.
She can offer designer baby bedding or a custom-made garment for your generosity.

Grass Identification
Hello Grass Lovers.
In my slow and patient efforts to 'cultivate' a native grass back garden, I've come across these grasses, which leave me confused. I'm not sure if they are indigenous grasses, or alien invaders.
They clump like natives. Their seeds are unfamiliar.
Please help me to identify whether they are native 'Friend' or 'Faux'.

Help Needed
Hoping there might be a landscape architect out there who could help.
I have been working with our local community House on a grant application to develop the outdoor space as a permaculture garden/play space for access by the community. However the grant has specified that plans need to be drawn up by a landscape architect. There is limited scope to do too much and really just an upgrade of existing facilities but hoping a landscape architect maybe happy to donate a small amount of time to help out. Any work gratefully acknowledged. If you can help, please get in touch.

Volunteer English Tutor Request
Hi Newlanders,
I know an Iranian asylum seeker living in Epping who would love to improve her very basic language, but finds it hard to get to formal classes because she has young children at home. If anyone feels like they could help with conversation or more structured lessons on a regular basis at her home, please contact her husband Ali, whose English is reasonable, on 0432 438 675.
Cheers, Susie.

Help Needed
I need some help from some kind soul who understands worms and their ways.
I have a worm farm (the cafe style) and although I have read the instructions that came with it, and spent much time reading the information on the web, I am still at a loss about how to retrieve the castings and generally keep the worms happy and productive.
I would be very grateful for some help (I think the worms would too!) and glad to pay for it.
Gillean.

Help Needed
Hi Newlanders and specifically Claremont Streeters,
Gigi here.
I was wandering down Claremont street a couple of days ago and saw poor old Maurice struggling to open his gate, I helped him do it and we chatted and he said he has just come back from being in hospital for 8 months. He needs help walking his lovely, docile dog (just around the block for 10 minutes really) and maybe for someone/s to get the newspaper for him. I can help him out a couple of days a week but thought there would surely be others in the 'hood who'd like to help too. He has no family or friends close by.
If you'd like to email me, gi-atti@hotmail.com or call 9354 9337 0458 357 035 and I will organise a roster I can hand to Maurice. He is quite confused and unstable on his feet but very friendly and quite funny!
Thanks, keep warm.
Gigi.

Help Needed
A young Afghan asylum seeker I used to visit in Broadmeadows Immigration Detention Centre – Qudrat – has the wonderful chance of reuniting with his mother and youngest sister in Australia.
In March, Qudrat’s oldest surviving sister, Najiba, who lives in Dandenong with her husband and children, lodged an application to bring their mother, Shiringol, and their surviving little sister, Nadia, to Australia.
These four people are the only surviving members of what was once a happy, prosperous family of 10 – mother, father, four sons and four daughters. After decades of targeted attacks and tragic, violent deaths (the family’s story is in the postscript), there’s finally a glimmer of hope.
Last week, we heard the heartwarming news that their application has been provisionally approved.
But, after paying the first round of fees, the family has now run out of funds. We have just weeks to raise the remaining $24,000 it will take to bring Shiringol and Nadia to Australia.
I hope you can help me.
We need to raise $24,000 quickly – by mid June. I thought I would cover the amount with a personal loan, but with a gross income of $25,000, no one wants to lend me $24,000 (can’t think why).
I’ve had to think of another way.
So, this Mother’s Day, I’m sending out this message in the hope that we can get 2000 people to donate $12 each, which will make $24,000.
It’s the cost of a bunch of carnations: $12.
So if you’d like to give your Mum a gift of making a difference this Mother’s Day, please:
1 Deposit your money into:
Women’s International Solidarity Australia (WISA <http://wisaustralia.wordpress.com/> ) bank account. Sorry, donations to WISA are not yet tax deductible.
BSB 033-039 (Westpac), Account number 348 902.
If you’re depositing funds online, please include the reference: Hazara family or Hazara or Haz.
If you’re depositing in a bank, you MUST use a numerical reference – please use the reference number 1111.
2 Forward this to people who you think I wouldn’t know. I need to get it out to 2000 or more people before Mother’s Day – and that’s assuming that every person who reads this donates something!
3 Download the attached card to give to your mother on Sunday. (Not the image above – the attachment to this email). It’s a beautiful image – Heather made it (thanks Heather). It’s your gift to your Mum. It will last a bit longer than a bunch of carnations.
It will bring Shiringol – who might never have thought to see her eldest daughter and last remaining son in person again – to live with them, in safety, in our Melbourne.
Many, many thanks.
