Kite Festival

Dear Neighbours,

Many of you will have noticed the kite festival in the Harold Stevens Athletic Field yesterday (Sunday 3 November). Many, many kites made of metal and paper were set free together with their 50 metre lengths of strong nylon string, much of which has ended up in and around the Edgar's Creek reserve. The nylon string is not easy to see if you're not looking for it and it is dangerous to birds, animals, people and their dogs - my dog and I were caught up in it and I was nearly garrotted by some hanging from a tree. 

Council gave the permit for this festival and clearly put very few restrictions on it - I rang the EPA and was told that it was Council's job to clean up. I would encourage you to complain to Council to make sure that they send a clean-up team and also to ensure they do something about getting compensation from the organisers of the festival.

Happenstance is a surprising new community arts festival held on the Merri Creek in Coburg North and Fawkner. From 1-5pm on the 25th of February, we invite you to take an unexpected journey along a well-trodden path, and see the creek in a new light. Discover a trail of music, art, and performance celebrating the Merri Creek and all it has to offer.

Happenstance is about engaging with the beautiful natural environment of the Merri Creek, bringing together local communities and highlighting the importance of sustainable practices in urban environments.

In conjunction with Friends of Merri Creek and the Sustainable Living Festival, Happenstance brings together emerging artists with local community groups to highlight the importance of preserving this wonderful natural resource.

There will be so much to discover: enchanting creatures wait to lead you on a journey beyond the physical. Stay a while and revel in the colours and richness of this trail through stories told with dance and movement. Give in to your curiosity, seek out new adventures, and delight in the magic of happenstance.

Happenstance is completely free and is proudly supported by the City of Moreland’s Celebrating Place Grant, Friends of Merri Creek and the Sustainable Living Festival.

The Village Festival

Just one more sleep until The Village Festival opens its gates in Edinburgh Gardens.

Over the last few days the tents have gone up, the caravans have been wheeled in, bunting has been hung, blackboards written, shows have been rehearsed, costumes have been chosen and magical ingredients have been sourced.

At 6pm tomorrow, Friday 28 October The Village Festival will start its party! A cross between an arts festival, a village fair and a carnival, this year's three day festival has more than 160 different shows, musical performances, one-on-one experiences and difficult-to-describe creative endeavours.

There are surprises around every corner with entertainment aplenty. Plus you are encouraged to become an active creative participants in the festival.

The music stage runs throughout the festival and features everything from ska to salsa and surf to sludge tango! The theatre selection is equally as impressive and caters for young and old. With puppets a-plenty and Dane Certificate’s magic show, the kids will have wide-eyed stories that last well beyond Cup Day.

As the evening rolls on there’s queer comedy, provocateur cabaret and the Freaky Sexy Weird Variety Show.

Caribe comes to Newlands!

Newlands Community House will dress itself colourful and vibrant this
Saturday, March 19th to host an afternoon of Afro-Colombian song and dance,
in the tradition of the UNESCO Heritage Listed "Carnaval de Barranquilla".

For this special occasion, children from Newlands Primary School, who have
been learning about the Carnaval, will be performing dances from the
traditional repertoire clad in costumes of their own making.

Workshops, live performances and a sample of traditional food with the
participation of Melbourne's only traditional Afro-Colombian drumming troupe
LA DESCARGA, ethnodanceologist Kathleen Gonzalez and renown musician Oscar
Jimenez.

An event proudly organized by Casa Cultura, celebrating Cultural Diversity
Week with the support of the Victorian Multicultural Commission,
Multicultural Arts Victoria Inc., the Moreland City Council's Community
Houses, Newlands Primary School, Refuge of Hope and the @Red Caribe del
Lenguaje in Barranquilla.

All Things Goat Festival

 

The All Things Goat Festival is about to begin. If you love country life, goats and chooks (to know them is to love them, right?), please come along for a great day out for you and your family. Lots of demonstrations - cooking and cheese/kefir/ice-cream/butter making, goat care, displays, lessons, great food and a delightful puppet play which shows how goats can be used to control feral pests - all will keep everyone in your family entertained. There will also be a number of breeds of different poultry breeds there and breeders to talk to. Sunday, 26th of October from 10am to 3pm at Bullarto Primary - near Daylesford. $5 entry per group. Run by Central Highlands Goat Club and Bullarto Primary. The best news is you won't have to book because tickets are on the gate and we promise enough for everyone to enjoy

Dear Friends, Family and other lovely Folk.

Following the success of the 2012 Merlynston Diverse Voices, we’ve decided to do it all again. This year the Merlynston Diverse Voices Festival will be held on Sunday November 16th (2014) from 11.00am – 4.00pm. So put it in your calendar, we'd love to see you there. 

I hate asking people for money but because we want this fabulous local festival to be free and accessible to all in our community we need to find other ways of fundraising, so we've set up this little online crowd funding campaign through Pozible. We’re trying to raise $3,000 to showcase even more great local talent on the day and to make the event a bit greener and even more amazing than last time. We have until 20th October to reach that target (And if we don't make that target we don't get any of the money.)

Festival of Colours

Join us this Saturday for Holi, the Festival of Colours: An interfaith celebration created in partnership with the Multicultural Women’s Sewing Group (Brunswick).

WHEN: Saturday 6th April, 10am - 12pm

WHERE: PepperTree Place, 512 Sydney Road, Coburg

WHAT: At Holi the Hindu Festival of Colours, is a celebration of good harvests and the coming of Spring. This event aims to bring the community together in an atmosphere of joy and colour. Help us create some colour through fabric weaving, mural drawing, face painting, Bollywood music and dance, the great tomato cook up and tasting colourful fresh juices & treats from around the world. Come in bright colours and enjoy!

COST: Free!

There is also a food swap running at the same time and place in this lovely community garden.
