Moreland Community Budget

Hi all,

 

I have been involved in supporting a project proposal to install 35 seats along the Moreland sections of the Merri Creek Trail as part of the Moreland’s Community Budget ideas program. These seats will give people a chance to stop, rest, connect with themselves, nature and each other, and take in more of our beautiful creek. Each seat will also have signage highlighting 1 indigenous plant, bird or animal that calls the creek home.

 

If any of these ideas also resonate with you please vote for this project through Moreland’s Community Budget voting site. Moreland Council will consider funding the proposals with the most votes and you don’t have to be a Moreland resident to vote.

 

To vote follow these steps:

2. You need to Log In or Join (This ensures people only vote once)
3. Select our project Merri Creek Trail: Seating Installation Blitz
4. You need to vote for three proposals, so please choose another two.

Voting closes on March 20, so you have 5 days left to vote!

 

Also, just a reminder that every Friday morning from 9.30 am – 11.30 am you can join the working bee led by Ian down at the eastern Merri Creek end of Ida Street in Coburg North for some weeding, mulching and indigenous plant sign painting. Zoe is also leading a working bee at the Rocky Outcrop at Coburg Lake (north side of lake between the toilets and flying fox park) from 9.30 am – 10.30 am on the first Wednesday of every month. The next Rocky Outcrop session will be Wednesday 6^th of April, 9.30 am – 10.30 am. No need to RSVP, just turn up with your own gloves.

Moreland Community Budget Ideas

Dear All,

Once you've voted in the Moreland Council Community Budget Ideas for the fantastic "Accessible Path & Shelter @ Newlands Neighbourhood Community Garden" project, perhaps you would consider adding your vote also to another Newlands-initiated project, "Voices of the North", which aims to provide free inspiring and encouraging creative writing workshops for teen and adult members of the Moreland community whose voices are often marginalised and under-represented. You can vote for three projects.

Moreland Community Consultations

Moreland City Council is currently running some important community consultations.

MCC is proposing some big changes to how they collect our waste and recycling. The first proposal is moving to a 4 bin system with different options for sizes and a new collection timetable.  The second proposal is changing how hard rubbish is collected, rather than do a whole council pick up they are proposing moving to a booking system.

There is also a lot of action happening at Edgar's Creek around new off-lead and on-lead areas for dogs. Moreland Community Scholarship

The Moreland Community Scholarship has been established by the Moreland City Council to support women from our community participate in the Women’s Environmental Leadership Australia (WELA) leadership development program in 2021.

The scholarship will cover the full costs of participation ($5,500, including travel costs) for one person from the Moreland community.

What is WELA and the leadership development program?

WELA is an organisation that empowers women and gender diverse people to gain the critical leadership skills required to make the urgent move to a sustainable future.

WELA runs an annual leadership development program that runs from May to October which includes both online and face-to-face retreats.

The program is limited to 20 places for women and gender diverse people actively engaging in paid or unpaid environmental work.

What is the new Moreland Community Scholarship?

The Moreland Community Scholarship will allow one Moreland resident to attend the full 2021 leadership program. This includes all costs of the program including travel, food and lodging for the retreats, materials and program delivery.

The scholarship welcomes applications from women and gender diverse people currently living in the Moreland local government area, and who are actively working for (paid or unpaid) and committed to our environment.

We particularly encourage applications from women and gender diverse people from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities, or from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities within Moreland.

Why are we funding this scholarship?

It is our goal to work with the community to achieve a zero carbon Moreland by 2040. The key components of our vision are 1) efficient and 100% renewably powered energy, 2) active and zero emissions transport, and 3) circular economy with zero waste.

This scholarship will support the further development of leadership from within our community, enabling a better future for our planet, our city, our community and our children.

There are so many great examples of leaders in our community.

Applications close 15 February 2021.

Interested residents who are not successful or eligible for the scholarship are still welcome to apply for the program and consider other available scholarships as part of the program application.

Community Engagement

Community Engagement and Public Participation in Moreland

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT REFERENCE GROUP – Expressions of interest.

We’ve heard the Moreland community tell us we need to look again at how Council engages with and consults the community. Your Council believes that all people should be able to contribute to their community and city, and working together we will do better.

Moreland is looking for 12 community members to be part of a reference group with Councillors and staff to re-think how we go about this.Members will work together to identify strengths and issues and recommend principles and changes to build greater understanding and involvement.Candidates will be selected to represent Moreland’s diverse communities and suburbs.

If you are interested in being part of the reference group and are able to commit to meeting monthly for at least six months, we would like to hear from you. You do not need to have prior experience. The first meeting will be Thursday, February 8, 2018.

Applications must be received by 8:00 am, Monday, November 6 to be considered.

Moreland is developing its new Arts and Culture Strategy and we want to hear from you

The Strategy will articulate how Moreland supports, advocates and collaborates with its creative sector – to make sure we set the right priorities and develop strategies that will address those priorities we need your input!

We will have a number of consultation events during 2016 but for now we would like for you to fill in our survey which is only open until 10 April 2016.

The survey asks questions such as

·         What do you think Moreland is doing well with its support of creative activities?

·         What would you like to see Moreland do differently?

·         What do you see as the most critical areas the next Moreland Arts and Culture strategy should focus on?

·         How can Council partner with artists or organisations to support artists and cultural programs in Moreland?

This information will be critical for us understanding which areas to focus our attention on as priorities so please take some time to fill in the survey.
