477 Sydney Road faces demolition.
Sydney Road, Coburg contains a range of shops that illustrate the evolution of the strip from the mid-nineteenth to the late twentieth centuries. Many of these are unprotected by a heritage overlay and are in danger of disappearing. We seek Merri-bek council to impose interim controls before more buildings are threatened.
What has happened?
A development application for 477 Sydney Road has highlighted the precarious nature of Coburg’s streetscape. The application seeks the complete demolition of an early twentieth-century building that for many years functioned as a shoe shop and later as a bank branch.
Plans show a new structure of seven levels containing twenty ‘apartments’ and a downstairs eatery. No provision is made for the building to blend in with the surrounding area, no provision is made for open or green space for the residents, and there is no provision for parking.
Why these buildings?
Shops such as 477 Sydney Road are a form of community memory and deserve to be safeguarded. Commerical, retail and industrial buildings from the past are as important as historic residential architecture. They can be repurposed and reused rather than destroyed.
How?
Heritage overlays enable retention of buildings while allowing appropriate development at the rear. In the medium to longer term, areas that preserve their historic streetscapes become desirable destinations in their own right.
Please support Coburg Historical Society as we approach Merri-bek Council to ensure urgent protection for Sydney Road’s remaining heritage shopfronts.

Coburg High Petition
The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council that Coburg High School (CHS) is the largest school in the Pascoe Vale electorate with 1,225 enrolments in 2022, yet it is consistently overlooked for critical infrastructure funding. www.parliament.vic.gov.au |

Climate Change Petition
There's no question that climate change was the defining issue of this year's federal election, but that's not where our fight ends. We’ve got a long way to go with the Albanese government still charging ahead with opening new gas mines.
Climate action must be the top priority of this new government - and that means ruling out fossil fuel expansion and putting the solutions to the climate crisis back in the hands of First Nations people who have been living sustainably on this land for over 60,000 years.
But climate action isn't enough - we must fight for a better future for us all and that means fighting for climate justice. Earlier this year at our Seed Summit, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people united with a vision for a more just and sustainable future and developed our Heal Country Declaration.
We’re calling on you to stand with us in solidarity and sign our declaration demanding:
- No more public money handouts to fossil fuel corporations. These handouts are an insult to Traditional Owners in the Northern Territory and First Nations communities right across the continent who spend everyday fighting back against the dangerous fossil fuel industry.
- Instead, public money should be invested into our communities and our futures. Public money is meant for public good, not to line the pockets of fossil fuel executives. With real investment into our communities and futures, we can see a just transition towards renewable energy, with First Nations leadership at the front.
- First Nations people should be leading the solutions to the climate crisis. We should be given the power and self determination to care for our land, our Country and our people our way - just like we have, sustainably for 60,000+ years without the colony’s interference.
Sign on to join the call to Heal Country and we’ll ensure our political leaders hear us loud and clear!
It’s never been more urgent to step up and come together. Our communities are already feeling the impacts of the climate crisis; from rising sea levels, devastating floods and extreme bushfires.
While young First Nations people are fed up with the way our political leaders are addressing the climate crisis, we also know how powerful we can be when we have people just like you standing shoulder to shoulder with us.

Over the last year the Federal Government has committed almost $1 billion to fund the dirty and dangerous ‘gas fired recovery’. This includes a $50 million hand out for big oil and gas corporations to fast track their fracking plans in the Beetaloo Basin, despite Traditional Owners and Aboriginal communities continually standing up and saying no. Will you stand with them? Right now, we have a window of opportunity to stand with communities on the frontlines by calling on the Senate to block the Morrison Government from rushing through new laws that would waste millions of public dollars on fracking gasfields across the Northern Territory that put sacred country, water and our future at risk. If we can show that there is a huge amount of opposition to this outrageous plan, then we can stop this gas fracking fund in its tracks. Aboriginal communities across the Northern Territory have been calling for a ban on dangerous gas fracking for over a decade. We know that this industry endangers the water supply of remote communities, exacerbates the climate crisis and endangers the health and futures of First Nations across the globe. Right now, greedy fossil fuel corporations like Origin Energy, Santos, and Empire Energy are trying to cash in on the government's promise of $50 million, in order to rush ahead and frack more wells this year. Not only is this a waste of public money, but it shows us that the government prioritises its dirty fossil fuel mates over First Nations communities. But the Senate can block this fund from going ahead. That’s why we need your support to call on the Labor Party and the Cross Bench to stand up against the Morrison Government’s destructive gas fracking plans. The Federal Government should be listening to First Nations people, who for years have been demanding to put our health and wellbeing over the profits of the mining industry. But what gives us hope is that whilst these oil and gas corporations are hungry for gas, it’s the sustained pressure and powerful resistance from frontline Aboriginal communities that has and will continue to hold them off. We are facing a climate catastrophe. Leading scientists have warned that we have less than 12 years to take emergency action on climate change, or we face the gravest threats to our local and global environment. The climate emergency is already all around us and is impacting our lives in so many ways - devastating droughts, floods, bushfires all over the country, deadly air pollution, and a reef on life support. This is an emergency and we must act now. Globally, several hundred...
