Newlands Community House will dress itself colourful and vibrant this Saturday, March 19th to host an afternoon of Afro-Colombian song and dance, in the tradition of the UNESCO Heritage Listed "Carnaval de Barranquilla".
For this special occasion, children from Newlands Primary School, who have been learning about the Carnaval, will be performing dances from the traditional repertoire clad in costumes of their own making.
Workshops, live performances and a sample of traditional food with the participation of Melbourne's only traditional Afro-Colombian drumming troupe LA DESCARGA, ethnodanceologist Kathleen Gonzalez and renown musician Oscar Jimenez.
An event proudly organized by Casa Cultura, celebrating Cultural Diversity Week with the support of the Victorian Multicultural Commission, Multicultural Arts Victoria Inc., the Moreland City Council's Community Houses, Newlands Primary School, Refuge of Hope and the @Red Caribe del Lenguaje in Barranquilla.
