For anyone who's copped a fine at the Safeway or Preston Market Carpark, did you know NSW private car park operators are banned from accessing the personal details of registered car owners? Let's make it the same here.
VicRoads - stop giving out our personal details! http://chn.ge/17DNwQM Paddy
Great idea - Just on this though, they are not "Fines" (which are imposed by government authorities) but rather "penalties" or "liquidated damages" pursuant to an alleged contract formed between the driver and the car park owner. It is possible for the car park owner to enforce these contracts but only by suing you privately which is very time consuming and costly. In other words, for the most part they rely on bluff and bullshit. This is not to say they won't do this and/or won't win - but I suggest anyone who cops one of these so called fines at least does a web search on the issue before coughing up.
ReplyDeleteFinally - just by way of example - If you lend your car to someone and they cop a so called fine but the car park owner ultimately tries to sue you they would fail - They are suing in contract and unless you personally parked your car there, they'll have a pretty hard time establishing that there was a contract....:)
