Transgression
Nest 20/20: Transgression
10 amazing local speakers will gather at Nest Coworking in Thornbury on Wednesday 3rd December, using the renowned Pecha Kucha format to enlighten and inspire on the provocative theme of Transgression.
When is transgression more than just breaking the rules? Is it moving beyond them, into a creative territory? Even a sacred one? Is transgression personal, or necessarily social? Can today's transgressions create tomorrow's ethics?
We'll hear from scapegoats and whistleblowers, from champions and eroticists, from shamans and tricksters, from lawmakers and lawbreakers. We'll explore transgressions as protest, as acts of love, and as art.
Do our transgressions define us? Liberate us? Can they heal us? Can they destroy us? Transgression is more than disruption. Be a part of it at Nest 20/20.
The night includes drinks, food from Nuoc Mama, and music. For a video of the kind of vibe to expect, click here.

Too young or straight to know about Cougar Vox? The punk muse and legend has recently resurfaced and reformed her band Grr!!
Have a look at her history here: http://cougarvox.blogspot.com.au
With family connections from Frida Kahlo, Neal Cassady, Andy Warhol and others, Cougar Vox did not have a conventional upbringing. Instructed in the tuba by Francis Ford Coppola at age 11, at 12 a house guest of family friend Warhol the week he was shot and recipient of Brian Eno's first ambient musical scores while she recovered from being hit by a semi. Emancipated from her mother at the age of 15, she was staking her claim on punk soil in scenes across the USA and the UK by the time she was 16 and has been battling her demons ever since. She is apparently an inspiration to dozens of musicians who cite her as an influence, though she has had no commercial success to back it up. Cougar is a vial of angst. Unstable and ready to blow. She tried to put it all behind her with a quiet life in the leafy northern suburbs of Melbourne, but now she's back with a few words for those who've tried to do her wrong.

HEART BEACH - AN OCEAN POP BAND THAT PLAYS EMOTIVE SKUZZ POP. They have five singles: Holiday / Weather (June 2013), House (August 2013), Record (October 2013) and Hours (December 2013). The band members are Jonathon McCarthy (guitar / vocals), Claire Jansen (bass / vocals) and Christopher Wessing (drums / guitar). Everett True (Collapse Board, Plan B) said this about them: “this music, this Heart Beach, is anything but difficult to get into: scintillating shimmering shivering girl-pop pop harmonies, slightly abrasive but only cos they refuse to add the fifth spoon, slightly sparse just so you can recall what a glorious moment in time that first Breeders album was, slightly sexy because all great music is slightly sexy. Melodies and songs and words to immediately love and immediately forget.” Enjoy a free sample here: heartbeach.bandcamp.com/
Claire Birchall & the Phantom Hitchhikers - Claire has been making beautiful, soulful music, writing songs and recording them since the mid-90’s. She took up guitar at 13, and began recording on 4-track cassette at 17, where she became a prolific songwriter and recrding artist. As well as continuing her solo work, she has played for many years in bands Paper Planes and The Happy Lonesome, and tonight fronts her newish ensemble The Phantom Hitchhikers. See more here: clairebirchall.bandcamp.com/
MelonMelonMelon - From Sydney this duo plays with conviction, passion and a whole lotta love. Love them here: soundcloud.com/melon-melon-melon
Bad Guys -Songs written by Randall Lee (Ashtray Boy, Nice, Cannanes) with or inspired by his children as well as his nephew Jack Lee (Beef Jerk, MelonMelonMelon). Limited self-titled cassingle available, but they’re disappearing fast! Get a taster at: http://locallegendsrecords.bandcamp.com/album/j2k-12
The Delvenes - With driving guitars and sweet melodies, Melbourne locals The Delvenes deliver spangly folk rock to your ears. Featuring the contrasting styles of lead vocalists, Pip and Marty, the Delvenes' sound is sometimes fun, sometimes melancholy and always delivered with a whole lot of heart. Lost Keys
Hi All.
Has anyone found some keys along the west side of Elizabeth St Coburg or out front of the Post Office on the east side near Coburg Hill Safeway?
My elderly mother walked down to pay some bills today at the Post Office and they seemed to have fallen from her walking frame. There is about 4-5 keys and a City of Moreland key tag.
Please contact me on 0408 696 360.
Accommodation Neeeded
Dear local residents,
We are a clean living, friendly family of four (no pets, no smokers) seeking short term accommodation (2 bedroom) from late Jan to early April 2015. Planning an escape from renovation hell. North Coburg ideal but surrounding areas good too!
Please contact Adele 0438 514 331.

Barry Beckett Build
Moreland City Council are proposing to extend Barry Beckett Childcare centre. At the moment they have the capacity for 45 children and would like to increase it by 44 to make it = 89 children. We like the childcare centre but they want to double their size. They will take over the vacant land and Trugo land. This area is a floodway zone. Our court and street is too small for such a large building. Most of the houses in the street have a heritage overlay. The is a large tall modern looking building.
Our Court is a quiet green leafy peaceful place. This new building will make it too busy, building does not suit area, our open space will be gone, it will be an unsafe entry for families into the centre, building on a flood plane puts us surrounding residence at a high risk in a flood situation.
Docs can be viewed at the Moreland City Council website, to find the plans for Barry Beckett go to:
www.moreland.vic.gov.au/
click on www.moreland.vic.gov.au/
Planning applications: in progress and decisions
Planning permit applications advertised
MPS/2013/365
Objections must be in by this Wednesday 26th November before 5 pm via email or drop off at Council office, email is info@moreland.vic.gov.au
We have not has any consultation from Council about this proposal.
Hope you can help.
Thanks,
Mary

House for Sale
Our house is situated right in the middle of North Coburg, opposite Cox Reserve, a big park full of beautiful trees with a playground, BBQ area and basketball half court. We are very close to the local shops, Safeway, cafes, kinder, daycare, school and of course the creeks.
It is a double brick semi-detached number with two bedrooms and an original brick garage. We have spent a lot of time trying to make it as energy efficient as possible, it has insulation in the roof and between the bricks. We have a 2000 litre water tank that waters the back garden and the front garden is watered by the grey water from the bath and shower. We have tried to make the gardens as low maintenance as possible.
We have recently varnished the original floorboards, painted the whole interior white, put up wooden pelmets, wooden picture rails and have fully renovated the kitchen and bathroom, whilst still trying to keep to the original 50's aesthetic......
The kitchen is really big and sunny, with doors leading out to a north facing deck (with a good view of the park). We have lots of storage in the kitchen, a beautiful concrete bench top and new oven and dishwasher. On the deck we have an enormous table that seats 15 and is surrounded by callistemon trees. Built into the deck is a bike parking area that can hold 3 or 4 bikes in an easily accessible position.
The bathroom has also recently been painted and we've installed a new vanity, a new three in one light and retiled the floor.
The master bedroom looks out on to our front garden and has loads of storage and is nice and big.
The second bedroom looks out on to the beautiful back garden and has shelving across one wall and is big enough to sleep three children comfortably.
We have ceiling fans in the lounge and both bedrooms. The heater is only a few years old and heats up the whole house.
There is a small studio that leads on to our favourite room of the house, our outdoor lounge room, which is surrounded by a very beautiful, luscious garden. We have spent ten years building up the soil and planting fruit trees and edibles. In the back yard we have a fig, plum, pomegranate, quince, nectarine apple, fejoia, elderberry, 2 avocados (1 fruiting), orange, mandarine, lime, kaffir lime tree and a rather large grapevine. In amongst all the fruit trees are loads of veggies, herbs and medicinal plants. At the moment the star jasmine is in full flower and smells incredible.
The backyard is also a bit of a kids paradise with a sandpit, cubby (with slide), swings and hammock. There is a chicken coop with five happy girls nestled in the back corner. We also have a good sized garden shed attached to the back of the brick garage.
Out the front we have a bit of a wild indigenous garden which screens most of the house from the street and attracts loads of birds, the nature strip is also planted with indigenous shrubs, grasses and wildflowers (no mowing here).
We have really beautiful neighbours along the whole street and being across the road from the park means we spend a lot of time hanging out there. We are going to find it hard to move away from all the wonderful friends we have made here (though we are not moving far!).
So here we are selling our beloved family home of ten years and moving a little closer to the creek. If you are interested in buying a house in Newlands we are hoping to avoid employing a real estate agent and sell straight to the purchaser, saving us both stress and costs. We have a price that we would like and can tell this to you directly!
If you would like to come and check out the house or know someone who may be interested please pass on our details. Call Mel on 0404 043 010 for further details.

Organics
I finally went to Merri Organics on Newlands Rd and got 5 avocados for $5!!!
If, like I did, you’re not too sure of where it is, when it’s opened and so on, here’s more info.
From my place on Elizabeth St. I went along the creek to the confluence then across the soon-to-be-wetland-golf practice area to the top northern houses backing that area. From there, you’ll see a concrete alleyway rising to Newlands Road. Go climb it! Turn right past the servos, and it is one of the shops there.
Opening days are Tuesdays to Saturdays as follows: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday till 5, Wednesday till 3, Saturday till 12 or 1. I can’t remember if it opens at 9 or 10 am so maybe someone else go and post full and precise opening times on the blog!
You can safely take your kids for a stroll or bike ride there: there is a kid’s corner with books and stuff and no crappy stuff they can pester you to buy. There are also some conventional veggies if that’s what you want. For the organic stuff, labels tell you where they where grown.
Next time I’ll go I’ll drop off some fresh marjoram from my garden (it badly needs a cut back!) for the free food swap corner. It is opened till Xmas; beyond if the community makes it worthwhile.
I enjoyed walking through parklands and back to get my veggies, sure beats traffic, so maybe see you there!
Pascale.
Free
Hi Newlanders, I have a fold out single chair from Ikea that we no longer have room for. It's in good condition but isn't the most comfortable mattress (bit hard for my liking although no one ever complained!). Dimensions when a chair are 82cm wide x 100cm deep x 84cm high. Pulls out to about 2m when a bed. Can pick up from George St, Preston or we can potentially deliver. Give me a call or text to organise. Cheers, Gen. 0475 915 525
