Hand to Ground

Hi All.

I just wanted to let everyone know how delicious the chickens are from the lovely farmers Emily and Alex at Hand to Ground.

We had one roasted this evening and it was absolutely beautiful.

On the whole we are not very used to paying the real price for chicken because we can get one cooked for under $10.00 at a supermarket. The real cost of chickens is much closer to $30.00 or $40.00. The chooks at Hand to Ground get moved every day so they are always eating fresh greens and they eat quality food that is not a mash of weird leftover products. The abattoir also charges $5.00 per chook to slaughter and they make it really difficult for small scale farmers, they much prefer to slaughter thousands of chooks from one place as that's how the system is set up. After costs are taken into account the farmers don't get a very big cut even though they work really hard every day of the year. It's up to us to buy from farmers that are farming in equitable and wholly sustainable ways.

If you want to treat yourself and your family this Christmas or you want to stock up on healthy chooks please send Emily and Alex an email  handtoground@gmail.com. The chooks are big enough to feed lots of people, our family of five had a big dinner this evening, we will have chicken and salad sandwiches for lunch tomorrow followed by a beautiful soup tomorrow night, easily three meals worth. Hand to Ground will be in North Coburg this coming Saturday with chooks, eggs, bread and soap delivering from our driveway in Livingstone St. Everything needs to be pre-ordered so they can be sure of selling enough to make the trip worthwhile.
