Recommendation

Untitled-2

Someone recently asked about a floor sander. I had a fantastic job done at a very reasonable cost a few years ago on our two bedroom Newlands house by David at Atherton Floor Sanding, 0412 068 977

Rather than asking people to text or email recommendations, I reckon it's a great idea to put our recommendations on the blog. If we think a tradie has done a great job, putting their name and contact up is great for local tradies, great for the community, and great for the blog, which is such a fantastic resource (thanks organisers!). Then, when we want a job done, we can go to the blog on the web and search, which is how I originally found my floor sanding and polishing bloke.

Help Needed

Untitled-2

Hoping there might be a landscape architect out there who could help.

I have been working with our local community House on a grant application to develop the outdoor space as a permaculture garden/play space for access by the community. However the grant has specified that plans need to be drawn up by a landscape architect. There is limited scope to do too much and really just an upgrade of existing facilities but hoping a landscape architect maybe happy to donate a small amount of time to help out. Any work gratefully acknowledged.  If you can help, please get in touch.

Has anyone got a recommendation for a roofing plumber or some such to fix a leaking roof?

The job is in Reservoir and I'd like to use a local tradie.

Mangosteens!

Untitled-2
Hi Newlanders,

My Mum is a mangosteen farmer and is willing to sell them to the 'hood at wholesale prices. They are organic, but not certified because that's too expensive on a small farm. The only insecticides used are aeroguard (on the pickers, not the trees) and a trap for a nasty sucking moth (poison is inside the trap and doesn't end up in the soil or on the trees).

The farm is on the edge of the Daintree rainforest and has been well managed for the past 20 years, with an indigenous timber forest planted on the hills and riparian zones, and wetlands restored to create a buffer for excess nutrient run-off (which is no good at all for the reef). Since Mum has been farming it, the creek is visibly healthier, there is thick rainforest canopy and under storey where there used to be weeds, grass and erosion, and the birds, wallabies and dingoes seem happy and abundant.

Mangosteens are the SE Asian cure for everything (from gut and inflammatory issues to schizophrenia) with loads of antioxidants and free radical fighting goodies. If you're keen you can use every part of the fruit.  And they are even more delicious than mangoes and lychees.

Cost would be $10 a kilo plus freight, in 10kg boxes.  Freight minimum is $50, which will get us about 10 boxes. After that it's about $4.50 a box. At the market they sell for a few dollars each, and are never as good as mum's.

She's at the very end of the harvest, so you'd have to give me you're order by Monday next week. Once I have the orders I can give you the final price.

Email me at toonaberwick@gmail.com.

My son has made a frog pond but we need to make it child-safe.

Do you have some reo mesh lying around that you don't need? Would you be willing to let it go cheaply, or in exchange for lemons, rhubarb, herbs, and/ or plant cuttings?

We need to cover around 1 x 1.5m (can cut down to size a larger piece, or possibly join two smaller pieces).

Please phone 0400 301 028.

Does anyone have a fire guard screen thing lying around that they are happy to give away?

We have a toddler who is fond of getting up close and personal with our gas heater and it's searing hot metal grille. The clothes horse just isn't cutting it.

Bridge

Untitled-2

Hi there,

My name is Erica and I'm a Coburg North resident. I recently heard a rumour that the council doesn't have firm plans to reinstate the Edgar's Creek footbridge that was washed away during the creek floods earlier this year. I've put together a Facebook page as I'm trying to gather community support to try and lobby council to take action on the bridge.

Cheers,

Erica.

#BanTheBag in NSW, Victoria and WA

The Project has teamed up with Clean Up Australia to call on NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, and WA Premier Mark McGowan to #BanTheBag. These three great Australians could see single-use non-biodegradable plastic bags banned across Australia, thanks to existing bans in South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory, the ACT, and an impending ban in Queensland. Support for existing bans is overwhelming. In South Australia, 81% of the consumers strongly support the ban. As do 73% of Territorians, and 70% of Australians living in the ACT.
Currently, Australians use an estimated four to six billion plastic bags each year. That’s 10 million bags every day. Every minute, we send 7,150 plastic bags to landfill. But 80 million plastic bags never make it to landfill, and instead end up in our litter stream, killing 100,000 birds and marine life every year. On average, it’s estimated we use a single-use plastic bag (like you’d find at Coles and Woolies) for just 12 minutes. And that same bag could take up to 1,000 years to break down. A plastic bag you use today will share this planet with your great great great great great great great great great great great great grandchildren.
Many countries around the world, from China to Italy, Papua New Guinea to France, Taiwan to The Netherlands, have already banned plastic bags. But despite supporting in spirit, the banning of plastic bags, the Premiers of NSW, Victoria, and Western Australia are yet to lead on the issue. We want them to #BanTheBag so that Australia is not left behind as the rest of the world addresses this serious and avoidable environmental disaster.
So who will lead the way. NSW, Victoria or Western Australia?  Who will ban the bag first? Gladys Berejiklian, Daniel Andrews or Mark McGowan? Whose name will our great great great great great great great great great great great great grandchildren read in their history books?
Once you’ve signed, contact these three great Australians directly and encourage them to lead the way and #BanTheBag!

Pure cotton exterior filled with pure new wool. It is king size, which I used on a queen size bed to get the nice over hang. Only selling because we have upsized to a super king doona. There are actually two doonas (sold as one) - in the warmer months you can just use one, but in the cooler months you can but the two together (hence the ties). You will not feel the cold on those winter nights I can assure you! Asking for $60, and also willing to throw in the two king size doona covers (see photo) plus matching pillow case covers for free.

Kefir

Untitled-2

I'm very interested in trying kefir as part of a well being plan but I'm not in a position to make and maintain the culture/grains and I was wondering if any of you would consider selling or bartering the strained kefir with me?

I'm looking to start with 200ml twice a week and I could easily come to you or meet locally as suits for pick up.

Email me at maria.chet@gmail.com and I'll get back to you promptly. Thanks in advance, kefir creators x
