Ethical Food

Untitled-2

Hi Newlanders.

We are very lucky to have three incredible small scale farmers coming to North Coburg on Saturday August 26 with truckloads of produce. There is a range of duck, pork and eggs to choose from. I have personally tried the duck and eggs and I don't think you could find a better product. I haven't tried the pork but it comes via a friend who is picky about where she gets her food from, after eating the latest range of free range pork (which we've already eaten) I'm buying up big because free range pork tastes so much better.

Please support our local farmers, we want them to keep coming to North Coburg to share their produce with us!

Hand to Ground

Hand to Ground is a young family (Alex and Emily Sims and their three young boys) in the third year of running a small scale regenerative farming business in the Macedon Ranges. We raise truly free-ranging chickens on fresh grass pasture for meat and eggs. We also keep Warré top-bar hives for raw honey and natural beeswax. We are passionate about ethical animal husbandry, holistic land management and producing delicious healthy food.

We call our eggs pasture raised because they are laid by hens who live on real, grass pasture instead of confinement indoors in a shed or cage. Our hens are moved onto fresh pasture every week and are free to express their chickenness by scratching in the grass, dust bathing and foraging for bugs and insects.
Our stocking density is approximately 750 hens per hectare (the Government stipulations for free-range is no more than 10,000 hens per hectare).
In addition to their wild forage, our hens are given a wholegrain feed that is milled in Victoria from Australian grown grain and legumes and is GM free. We do not use any hormones, antibiotics, yoke colourants or animal derived feed.
Taste the difference of an ethical, nutrient dense and seasonal pasture raised egg!

We have cartons and trays of eggs available for order now at

Ravens Creek

Based in the Surf Coast hinterland town of Moriac, Ravens Creek Farm is rapidly gaining a reputation for producing some of the best tasting pork and bacon in South West Victoria.

With a passion for regenerative and ethical agriculture, Farmer Hayden allows his heritage breed pigs to live a truly free range life. The pigs live outside on 100% chemical free pastures and they are free to express their natural behaviours like rooting around the grass, tasting different plants and bugs and wallowing in cooling mud baths! The pigs are not treated with any chemicals and they are fed on a custom mix of grains totally free from GMO grains, meat meal, antibiotics or hormones.

As a result they produce incredibly full-flavoured, melt-in-your-mouth meat that is simply incomparable to conventional pork.

The True Free Range pork produced at Ravens Creek Farm is just one element of this diverse, regenerative property. Husband and wife team Hayden and Jasmin also produce beef, lamb, eggs, honey and berries - all without the use of chemicals. Much of their produce is sold at their on-farm cafe and farm shop, which is open all year serving seasonal breakfast and lunch.

Ravens Creek Farm meat, eggs and honey is also available at various retailers around the Geelong and Surf coast region.

Hayden and Jasmin are excited to be able to service the growing number of people in the Melbourne region that are looking for high welfare, high quality meat that they can buy direct from the farmer.

Vue du Volcan

A love of delicious, ethical, slow food led Fiona and Ben to Vue du Volcan Farm - a small, mixed, regenerative farm in the Central Highlands (Glenlyon) of Victoria. We run the the farm based on holistic, regenerative principles with a focus on soil health, animal welfare and working towards closing the loop. Planning to be multi species, we currently produce ducks for meat, including hatching our own from breeding stock and butchering and producing delicious products.

The ducks are pasture raised from day one and slow grown over 14 weeks. The ducks are moved to fresh pasture every week which is of benefit to the ducks and the pasture. They are fed a freshly milled grain ration (GMO free) in addition to their foraging. We think this method of raising the ducks results in the best flavour. Our guardian dog, Thibaut, and electric fencing keeps the ducks safe from predators.

We see direct marketing our products to the eater as very important in the longevity of the farm and people understanding the duckiness of the duck. We are currently planning to launch our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model offering shares to people who love slow grown, ethical duck. We’d love to see more ethical, slow grown duck on people’s plates!
