Come celebrate Poorneet (tadpole) season 🐸
& Community Food Growing! 🥬

Learn all about the frogs, birds, and plants that call this place home during the wonderful Poorneet season in Melbourne. Hear from Aunty Jo Russell about the rich history and use of native Australian plants and bushfoods. Meet with experts in sustainable gardening techniques and learn how to adapt your patch and manage water during these hot, hot summers! Plus much more!

Festive picnic lunch at the Wayi Community Garden,
you're invited!

Join us Saturday 6th of September for a special performance by the Takatāpui Waiata Rōpū - Māori LGBTQI+ choir, followed by a picnic lunch, with soup and baked goods available from Brewlands and our Community Bakesale.

Low-cost veggie and indigenous seedlings from Rainmoth Community Nursery will be available on the day, as well as a host of kids' activities, readings, drop-in workshops!

Workshops with Nangak Tamboree Indigenous Nursery & Cranbourne Royal Botalincal Gardens to be announced for October.

  • Meet the Frogs of Merri Creek | 5-6.45pm

Join Tania from Merri Creek Management Committee for an evening to learn more about the Frogs of Merri Creek. Learn to listen for their frog calls!

After we've been introduced to the frogs of the creek and learnt to use frog ID apps, we will grab our torches and walk to the nearby Merri and Edgar's Creek Wetlands.

At the wetland we will listen for frog calls and learn how to make a good frog call recording to help contribute to important research mapping our local frog friends.

Please wear closed, flat footwear, long pants and warm clothes. Bring a torch for the return walk.

This is a family friendly event, children must be closely supervised. Children under 12 free!

  • Bushfoods with Aunty Jo Russell | 10am-12pm

Join Aunty Jo Russell to learn about the rich history and use of native Australian plants, offering a deeper understanding of how these plants have sustained and nurtured Indigenous communities for thousands of years.

'Hi, my name is Aunty Jo Russell, and my ancestors are the Wiradjuri peoples of NSW. My knowledge of Bushtucker, Fibre and Medicine Plants comes from my years of studying and teaching Conservation and Land Management with cultural heritage at the Indigenous Education Centre, Kangan Institute, Broadmeadows. I will be sharing my knowledge on how we can grow the indigenous plants of the land we live on for sustainable food development'.

  • Birds of the Merri Creek | 9.30am-12:30pm

Come and join a birding walk along the Merri Creek with Ann and Karen McGregor from Friends of Merri Creek and Arimbi Winoto of Friends of Merri Creek.

Ann is a Life Members of Friends of Merri Creek and have been working on protecting the creek for nearly 50 years. Ann has co-ordinated the Friends of Merri Creek bird surveys since 2008. Arimbi is a champion Tawny Frogmouth spotter! Ann, Karen and Arimbi are a wealth of knowledge and share it in an accessible and fun way!

This walk is family friendly, children must be supervised. Children under 12 years are free, use code 'CHILD'

  • Water Smart Gardening with Sustainable Gardening Australia

Last summer was hot and long! Let's learn how to manage water well for a productive garden.

We will hear about smart design, garden zones, plant selection, dry climate plants, the crucial role of soil, different types of mulch, spreading rainfall across all areas of your garden, capture and storage of rain water, grey water, irrigation, water smart technologies.

  • Seed inspired vessels with Lizette Vieyra | 1.30 - 4.30pm on Fri 5 Sept and Sat 6 Sept

Join artist and community member Lizette Vieyra over 2 sessions across Friday and Saturday and learn how to sculpt and shape recycled materials into a small vases and vessels. These two workshops allow you to explore different forms and decorative details, before painting and personalising your finished piece. 

All abilities welcome - no prior experience required - each participant will take home a unique creation. 

Paper pulp sculpture and paper mâché are sustainable and accessible art techniques that transform simple materials into unique handmade pieces. This two-day introductory workshop (3 hours each day) invites participants to experience the joy of shaping and decorating a small vase.

  • Picnic in the Park with a special performance by Takatāpui Waiata Rōpū - Māori LGBTQI+ choir

Join us in the Newlands Garden for an afternoon picnic.

The Takatāpui Waiata Rōpū - Māori LGBTQI+ choir will be performing a very special karakia (blessing), as part of a tikanga (cultural protocol) before we all join together for kai (food).

BYO picnic food and drinks, rugs and friends!

Angela Foley from the Merri Creek Management Committee will be doing Skin art & face painting of your favourite native flora and fauna.

NECCHi artist-in-residence Vanessa Chapple will launch  'Learning on Country' library with a reading.

There will be soup available (BYO mug), goodies available at our Community Bakesale to raise money for Palestine, and low-cost veggie and indigenous seedlings from the Rainmoth Community Nursery available.

Brewlands open from 9am - 1:30pm
Picnic from 12pm on Saturday 6th of September

Bring your lunch, a comfy rug, your closest friends, and a mug and a plate and join your neighbours for our Picnic in the Park event, held on Saturday the 6th of September, from 12 - 3pm.
 

  • Brewlands will be serving brews and refreshing native plant inspired iced teas from 9am - 1:30pm
  • Bring your own mug and enjoy a cup of homemade soup for a gold coin donation
  • Pick up a treat from our community bake sale and help us raise money for Palestinian families

  • Kid's Activities include native floral & fauna skin art by Angela Foley from Merri Creek Management Committee (12:45 - 2:45pm), and a fun, fluid movement workshop, Fluid Body, Fluid World, with Live Particle, exploring the parallels between the watery worlds of tadpoles (poorneets) and how we too have a body of water (10:45 - 12pm)
NECCHi will be hosting a bake sale to
raise money for Palestinian families 

NECCHi will be raising money for Palestinian families affected by the brutal Israeli assaults on Gaza, Al Quds, and the West Bank at our upcoming Picnic in the Park.

We're inviting all passionate local bakers to contribute some homemade treats to help us raise funds.

Bring along your plate of baked goods to our Picnic in the Park on Saturday the 6th of September, and help us raise funds for a much-needed cause.

All treats - sweet and savoury - are welcome.

Drop-Off Details

  • Bring your plate of treats to the Newlands Neighbourhood house, 20 Murray road, from 9am on Saturday 6th September
  • Please provide a written list of ingredients to display alongside your treats, and note if they're vegan, GF, or cater to any dietary or allergy needs
  • We recommend using a paper plate to plate up your treats (we can't guarantee nice plates will make it back to their owners)
