join us at our upcoming agm :)

You're warmly invited to our 2024/2025 Annual General Meeting, where we gather our Board, Staff, Volunteers, Members and friends together for our AGM.

This is an important event in the NECCHi calendar as we take time to look back and celebrate all the amazing community projects that have been implemented in the past year, recognise the contributions of staff and volunteers, and say thank you to our Board members. We’ll also be electing our Board for the year ahead.

The NECCHi Board is responsible for the good governance of our organisation and setting our strategic goals. We couldn’t provide spaces for our community to connect and flourish in without a dedicated Board and we are so thankful for the commitment of the NECCHi members who take on this role.

This year we’ll be hosting this event in the Newlands Neighbourhood House and enjoying light refreshments and great company as we share stories and reflections. We look forward to celebrating with you!

See you there at 6:15pm onwards, Wednesday the 29th of October!

Hi All,

The planting season has come to a close and now the maintenance tasks begin!

On Sunday 19 October at 10.00AM until around 12 noon The Friends of Merri Creek @Edgars Creek will be conducting maintenance activities based around the Kodak Bridge site (https://maps.app.goo.gl/ETDcKtVtw9ECTuFh6).

It is a warm day forecast with a potential high in the late 20's in the afternoon so good thing it is starting early! So, plenty of water, sunscreen and other protections please.

I'll be absent on the day, Ben will be coordinating. However, please reach out to me if any questions arise.

See you on the creek! (on another day!)

Regards,

Possible Fundraiser

Untitled-2

Hi, Community.

During a recent trip to Timor Leste I met a lovely family that had a 17 year old daughter that has been offered a 75% scholarship in international law at an excellent university in Indonesia. The shortfall (25%) is around $10,000 a year for 3 years. The family have exhausted all avenues and can't afford this much money, they are close to saying no to the opportunity.

A few of us (local folks) are thinking of starting a fundraiser but first wanted to gauge the interest in the community.

If you think this is something that you would choose to contribute to, please send me an email on melmate@hotmail.com

Thanks so much!

Raising Rarity: Endangered Plants & Sowing the Seeds of Wonder with Tash Van Velzen & seed ecologist Dr Meg Hirst, Royal Botanical Gardens Victoria | Fri 24th October, 10.30am - 12pm | Newlands

Raising Rarity (RBGV) helps community to grow and care for a threatened plant that occurs (or did so historically) within proximity to their location.

Learn about botany, how to grow and monitor plant health and help care for endangered plants!

Given our proximity to Hidden Creek, we will be looking at Swamp Everlasting Xerochrysum palustre (pictured). A relatively large, yellow-flowered native daisy growing in seasonal or permanent wetland habitats. We are aiming to plant a test bed for the community to monitor and learn about. There are only about 35 wild populations of Swamp Everlasting left in south-eastern Australia!

Tash Van Velzen is a horticulturalist and facilitates outreach for Raising Rarity RBGV.

Dr Meg Hirst is a plant ecologist with specialist experience in ex situ seed banking and plant conservation through her work with the Victorian Conservation Seedbank at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. Meg holds a PhD in plant ecology from the University of Melbourne and is a teacher and researcher with experience in growing, tending and studying plants in both scientific, public gardens and experimental settings.
