Friends of Coburg Lake and Surrounds

Untitled-2

Hello fellow planters and carers of the creek.

Care of our new heightened requirements for social distancing we are cancelling our monthly weeding, mulching and planting morning at Coburg Lake, that would have started today at 9.30 am.

If you would still like to help hand weed this site, or any of the others we have been revegetating over the last 10 years along the creek corridor between Coburg Lake and Goleen Street, please feel free to do so by yourself.  If doing so, please ensure that you keep a safe 1.5 metres away from the Merri Creek path, to reduce our risks of close contact and transmission of COVID-19.

If you do want to adopt a patch or area to hand weed along our beautiful Merri Creek, knowing what is and isn’t a weed can sometimes be tricky, especially when it comes to native grasses and groundcover plants.  I encourage you to err on the side of caution, i.e. if you are not sure, please leave it in the ground.  You can also take a photo and email it to me and I can try and help you identify it, or get help to identify it for you.

I hope you all stay safe, lots of hand washing, social distancing, eating healthy food and finding ways to get in some exercise and keep mentally and emotionally well,

Take care.

Community Climate Action Series

Untitled-2

The Community Climate Action Series (that we host with Neighbours United for Climate Action, normally at the Newlands Neighbourhood House) is still going ahead - we are adapting it to be delivered on-line (via zoom) until it’s safe to meet in person again. We figure it’s more important than ever to connect with each other and share ideas… and the climate crisis remains as urgent as ever in this time of pandemic. So please join us this Saturday for our very first on-line session if you can!

It will run from 2-3.30pm.

Topic: Citizens’ Assemblies - what are they and how do they work? (Find the link to the Facebook event here)

What is a Citizens' Assembly and how does it work? What would it look like here and how would our system change if we had one? Did you know that cities and countries around the world have had citizens’ assemblies? Extinction Rebellion (XR) have three key demands the world over, and installing Citizens’ Assemblies (CA) alongside parliaments is their third one. Find out more at this session, presented by CA enthusiast, Sonia Randhawa from Coalition of Everyone. Register here https://us04web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMode6rrz4qAP4SmO7pB_j0ZuAtH6Gpwg

Hope to see some of you via the computer screen on Saturday :)

Hi Necchi Community,
Last night Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a stage 2 round of shutdowns. This time community centres (aka neighbourhood houses) were listed amongst many other community and recreational services being forced to close to the public, as our governments try to contain the spread of coronavirus.
Due to this announcement from close of business today and will look to process any refunds/credit for any programs or classes booked for the last week of term 1 and any school holiday activities, upon our return.
Any urgent requests or queries please contact manager@necchi.org
We understand that these are stressful times and we ask that you have patience with us while we work within government guidelines.
Please note there is a community care group starting up in East Coburg. Please visit their Facebook page. If you are experiencing distress in this time here are some support materials from Beyond Blue https://www.beyondblue.org.au/the-facts/looking-after-your-mental-health-during-the-coronavirus-outbreak
We will be in touch with updates for the coming weeks and will be guided by the information and directions provided by local health authorities and the World Health Organisation, and its Occupational Health and Safety obligations.
