What to bring to a Food Swap when “There is
nothing in the garden”?
How amazing! Some
people do not come to a local Food Swap because they “have nothing to swap”,
and then sometimes add: “We just started the veggie garden”. Now, to a Food
Swapper, that is equivalent to bringing a newborn to a convention of Baby
Booties’ Knitters and not let them smile to or hold bub!
So let’s clarify:
a a) What people bring to a Food Swap,
they want you to have it! Particularly if you are starting on a new garden!
Someone will bring something that is of use to them: it might be you or not but
that does not matter! It is about sharing one’s excess abundance and building
up the community.
b b) With
a bit of a good look around the garden and/or some creative thinking there is
always something to share that is food or garden related. Some of my favorites: Sprouts, Snails (for
chooks), Seedlings and any good gardening tip. Stretch your imagination!
The next Newlands
Garden Food Swap is on Sunday 17th of March, 2-3 pm at Hutchison
Place. A good time for some autumn
planting. As usual, there will be free potting mix and rooting hormones to
start cuttings. I’m bringing some Blueberries and Strawberries plants I
propagated.
There will be locals
to meet and chat with. See you there.
