ECO Home and Body @ The Preston Market!

Untitled-2

A new stall, ECO Home & Body, has arrived at the Preston Market on Fridays, 8am-8pm, providing all your environmentally freindly Home and Body products. Come down and say hi, and have a bite to eat in the market. We are situated opposite the health food shop.

At ECO Home & Body, Emma has hand selected products according to their ECO benefits, taking into consideration what goes into the products, where they are made, packaging, the ethos of the companies, and fair trade practices.
ECO Home & Body’s range of products provides alternatives to everyday products that have as little impact on the environment as possible, and employ the concepts of precycling. PRECYCLING is a concept that prevents waste by reducing, reusing and buying consciously. By precycling we can minimise the amount of waste we create, conserve resources and save money. A major precycling concept of ECO Home & Body is the bulk liquid cleaning products - BYO bottles to refill your cleaning products with high quality, yummy smelling products.
New products will be added to the range in the coming weeks to provide the best alternatives in healthy living for our homes, bodies and the enviornment. Emma can be contacted on 0450 445 480 if you have any questions.

Open Table

Untitled-2
MEDIA RELEASE 28 MAY 2013 — Open Table
Open Table is a shared initiative from five RMIT University students and alumni contributing skills and knowledge from Social Work, Landscape Architecture, Industrial Design, Sustainability, and Economics. Since early 2013 the project has gathered a larger group of volunteers passionate about contributing time and skills to Open Table.
What we are
Open Table is a not-for-profit food redistribution and community connectedness project. We hold monthly Sunday dinners at the Brunswick Neighbourhood house, using excess food that would otherwise go to waste. The dinners are inclusive, accessible and free.
This project addresses the need for greater community connectedness and participation, as well as providing for the material needs of more disadvantaged members of the community. We seek to bring together disparate groups within Brunswick to greater links and understanding.
What we do
Open Table has just finished a six week pilot, and on Sunday 2 June we will launch our first in permanent series of monthly dinner parties. On the first Sunday of every month at the Brunswick Neighbourhood House, De Carle St, we welcome friends, families, neighbours and anyone up for a free sunday feast.
Over the last six weeks, we have made friends with our neighbours in supported living and community housing in Brunswick, and extend special welcome to people often excluded in local activities.
Vision
We want to get to know our neighbours. We want our neighbours to get to know their neighbours. We created a fun, sustainable and inclusive environment to get this happening. Implicit in this project are values of social justice and food security.
Sustainability + Food Waste
Australians discard $8 billion of edible food every year in our homes, this is roughly 350kg of food per year in the bin (Source: NSW EPA, 2012). Sadly, this does not even take into account edible food wasted in production, distribution and point of sale. Food that goes to landfill doesn’t biodegrade like it does in your compost - as it rots it releases methane and other greenhouse gases.
Open Table is one independent organisation engaging global problems with local solutions.
Relationships
Open Table is based on collaboration within: our working group, the Brunswick community, local businesses and supporting organisations. Through the generosity of the Brunswick Neighbourhood house we have a permanent home for our monthly dinners. With support and guidance from Moreland City Council we are able to use the community kitchen to cook delicious vegetarian meals.
We have had many offers of support from local businesses we would like to thank them for their support and generosity. We look forward to developing methods for redistribution of excess food in partnership with businesses in Brunswick.
Personal Stories
Brunswick florist collaborating with 2 regulars from local community housing. Joe and Gavin are some of our most enthusiastic regulars who arrive a first every week. They have a strong sense of community and always give a hand setting the tables, and getting ready for the main crowd. They came up with the idea of putting vases of flowers on the table and took it as a serious responsibility when a local florist donated their (otherwise wasted) end of week flowers. Open Table has helped assist a local business dispose of their waste and given a budding florist and interior designer a chance to showcase their skills.

WELCOME TO JUSTMUMS RECRUITMENT

Who we are

JustMums Recruitment was founded by experienced Recruitment Consultant and proud mother of two Rachel Perkins, who whilst on maternity leave identified a distinct lack of specialised services and support for mothers balancing a career with raising children.
From this, JustMums was launched in Melbourne with the vision to connect working mothers and mothers returning to work with full and part-time jobs with a focus on flexible, job-share and family-friendly employment opportunities.
We are a niche agency staffed by mums; dedicated to mums. Although we specialise in working with mothers we extend our support to working fathers and all candidates that require support in achieving their career goals.

What we do

JustMums Recruitment specialise in providing job search support and placement across a broad spectrum of employment industries including but not limited to Accounting, Banking & Finance, Administration & Customer Service, IT, Legal, Sales & Marketing, Education & Training and Health & Community. We offer both contract and permanent positions and service metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.
We partner with public and private organisations that promote flexible work practices and team with businesses that truly value the significant contribution working parents make to the workplace. JustMums work alongside Human Resources teams and hiring managers to deliver a comprehensive package of recruitment support including the attraction, screening, interviewing and short-listing of candidates for their vacant positions.

Our belief

JustMums operate on the belief that mums (and dads) CAN have it all; success at work as well as at home. Our aim is to connect our incredible talent pool with like-minded employers to promote the achievement of a happy work-life balance.

Bread Price Increase (sorry)‏...

Untitled-2

Hi Guys, in one year the price of flour has gone up with 30%!
I have to change the prices of the bread.
But to ease the pain I decided to make olive bread again!
I think the community needs it.
So the new prices are;
Organic white sourdough 800grams;$6
Organic whole meal sourdough 800grams; $6
Sourdough olive bread $7.50
Organic white sourdough baguette $5
Almond and coconut chocolate slice (Gluten free) $10

Another thing; the bakery is going to move to Franklin in Tasmania.
I am happy to keep baking, and I will, but for some of you the trip down might be a bit much on a Saturday morning. This won't happen till January 2014, so please enjoy the bread till then. Enthusiasts could take over this community responsibility; I am happy to pass on my two bobs worth of knowledge!
We will be building a house in the next two years, on Temperance Lane (!) Franklin. Half an hour drive from Hobart. Please come and visit! Sip

The Growing Food Project

Untitled-2

Dear friends & colleagues,

We believe that positive stories inspire positive change. The Growing Food Project film tells the inspiring story of Melbourne's urban agriculture movement and how communities are responding to our current broken food system.

Changing our broken food system won't happen without you, and neither will The Growing Food Project. We need your support!

We only have 14 days to go and another $2525 to reach our $5000 target on Pozible. Every single pledge is a small step towards finishing this short film. The film showcases examples of people already building a better food system.  Let's bring this film to life and help build a better food system for everyone.

Please share this email with your friends and family, and make your contribution to The Growing Food Project here

On behalf of the crew, THANK YOU!

Best wishes,
Rasha Tayeh

The Rockafillies!

Untitled-2

Hi all,

Well whattya get when you cross the music of Wanda Jackson, Hank Williams, Elvis Presley & Jody Galvin?? You get  THE ROCKAFILLIES. That's right folks, a new wee country swing/rockabilly band featuring yours truly on rhythm guitar/vocals, Mon Weightman (The Shambelles guitarist) on drums (of sorts)  & Kate Clarke (The Houndlings) on upright bass and with special guest fillies & fellas at each gig (pedal steel, fiddle, lap steel, clarinet - all sorts of guest players are gonna pop up at each gig!). This toe tappin music and band of nonsense is bound to take away any potential winter blues that may be lurking!

So please come help us launch this little ripper of a band on Sunday 2nd of June @ a new venue - The Royal Oak Hotel - Nicholson St, Nth Fitzroy from 4.30-6.30pm. Please tell all your mates cos we don't have many and if you're a venue booker or radio announcer please give us a gig or a plug!

Onyas!
Much silliness

Carpet and Underlay

Untitled-2

Hi Folks,
We just pulled up a room of carpet (approx 3x3M). The carpet is really only good for garden purposes but the underlay is in really great condition if you can think of a use for it (it's the ripply rubbery kind). Give me a ring if you wanna come and grab it! (There will be another room's worth in the near future too)
Cheers,
Amy

See the Anti-Litter Ad Banned by Channel 9

Untitled-2

Channel 9 has refused to run a terrific advertisement by Greenpeace that publicises Coca Cola's opposition to a container deposit recycyling scheme in Australia*.  It's definitely worth viewing: sea birds feature, and by doing so you increase the count for numbers of people that have watched the clip.   http://youtu.be/Q7Uxaw6YoRw

* Having deposits on containers is the best way to recycle bottles and cans, which make up a large volume of litter in waterways like Merri Creek.  We needed this scheme in Victoria at least 20 years ago, but pressure from the beverage industry has stopped it from happening (just like they stopped the ad on Channel 9).

Let's use people power to get container deposits in Victoria NOW!

Friends of Edgar's Creek

Untitled-2

How time seems to fly - we are scheduled to plant again this weekend.
We are planting on Sunday, usual time 1-3PM and we are working at the Silurian Cliff site - an extension north of the cliff above the escarpment where the willows once stood (until last year). This site is easily accessed by following the informal path, head south from Livingstone St or head north from Ronald St, past the Kodak bridge and take the stairs down the cliff. You will see us and the trailer on site. As usual Rob and I will be on site from around 10.30-11.00 AM and all are welcome to come along earlier and assist with set-up of the planting (good for those who can't hang around in the afternoon or have other commitments to get to!)
The forecast is looking favourable - 15 degrees, only a slight chance of a shower and light northerly winds.
Don't forget that our calendar of events is complete for 2013 and is available on the website.
See you on the creek!

Kind regards,
David Pavone
President FoEC.

Last of the Free Chook Food!

Untitled-2
Hello Lovely Locals.
The last of the free chook food has been delivered, it is on our front porch near our front door ready for the taking.
29 Peterson Ave North Coburg.
There are no more big 25kg bags..........but there are loads of boxes of activated buckwheat that has been caramelised. It is in small 500gm bags and there is heaps (it is actually very tasty).
Between us we have distributed a lot of chook food amongst the community and saved it from going in landfill. Our blog is wonderful!
A big thanks must go out to Michael for delivering it here, he has moved a lot of buckwheat around on our behalf.
Please come and grab some and tell your friends!
Cheers Mel and Andy.
