East West Link

Dear Protectors of Public Lands Victoria Inc. members and friends
Best wishes to all our compatriots for a victorious New Year in 2014 in the battle over the East West Link.
I  Has EW Link Drilling Killed Melbourne's Famous Lemon Scented Gums in Carlton?
The two Corymbia Citriodora (Lemon-Scented Gum) on the roundabout at north end of Swanston Street across from the Cemetery  are looking very sick and the question arises - have they been affected by the drilling on the roundabout which was right on the tree protection zone (the "drip line")?  See the attached photo taken of our snap protest on 27 July 2012. See how close the drilling rig is to the trees.
The trees are on the Significant Tree Register of the National Trust as they are "in a unique location ...and so provide a contribution to the landscape..." While there is no information on when the two trees were planted or by whom it is thought they may have been planted "on the instructions of Walter Burley Griffin after the completion of Newman College. (He was the architect of this University of Melbourne College opposite the roundabout) There are several Lemon-Scented Gums in the College grounds and it is known that he particularly liked these trees."

II Protests Over EW Link and the Loss of Parkland and Axing of 5200 Trees in Royal and Princes Parks
Thanks to activists drawn from different groups including those from the City of Moreland since the beginning of November 2013 we have had snap actions putting up protest placards on the avenues of trees along Macarthur Road and Elliott Avenue through Royal Park and in front of the Zoo on Derby Day 2 November 2013; on Cup Day 5 November 2013 and on Boxing Day 26 December 2013. (All these trees will be axed and the park concreted over.) Then we put up signs along the elms in the Royal Parade central medium strip on Box Day 2013 then in Princes Park on New Year's Day. The idea was to catch heavy holiday and event traffic. There were a few adverse comments but  lots of toots of approval.
The City of Melbourne instructs staff to tear the posters down as "the staples are damaging the trees"!  The posters read: "Say No to EW Link Next To Zoo"; "Stop Trashing Melbourne" and "Say No to $8billion EW Link."   See photos of placards on eucalypts and a Canary Island Palm in Elliott Avenue and Macarthur Road. See Lorikeets in habitat - sugar gum to be axed for EW Link. Note that a number of people have recorded the action on UTube but I have not included the links  as they name individuals. Better not to have records of names.
See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYYEoGKmb8Y BUGA UP (Billboard Utilising Graffitists Against Unhealthy Promotions) recalling their campaign against advertising cigarettes.  If anyone is inspired by BUGA UP for action over the EW Link advertising let us know!
III East West Link Drilling in City of Yarra
It is expected that the drilling might start tomorrow Monday but the Linking Melbourne Authority might not advise residents and businesses in Fitzroy and Collingwood in an attempt to keep protestors and picketers at bay. Good luck to the "serial pests" if you chose to appear at the drill sites.
It is not known if any more drilling will be scheduled for the City of Melbourne. We have asked to be advised immediately especially re Royal and Princes Park plus the Cemetery.
IV Port of Melbourne Objects to Plan for EW Link
http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/port-of-melbourne-calls-for-changes-to-eastwest-link-plans-20140102-307zp.html Port of Melbourne calls for changes to east west Link plans 3 January 2014 This article reveals that the whole project is being planned on the run!
V Loss of New Seeing Eye Dog Centre Kensington with EW Link .
Media reports suggest that Linking Melbourne Authority did not know that this centre would be in the way of the aerial EW Link roadway to the Port. http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/eastwest-link-might-force-seeing-eye-dogs-new-kennels-to-close-20131230-3035r.html
See David Muir's touching film "Save West Bank" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vb-8xznV0sc  This is on the threat to Kensington and the Moonee Ponds Creek from the East West Link. It shows the Seeing Eye Dog Centre. And this film was made in September 2013! We knew about it months ago More proof that the EW Link is being planned on the run.
