Coburg RSL Band Night #3 on July 5

Untitled-2

323 Sydney Road, COBURG
7pm, $5 (includes light supper!)
All ages 0-101+ are welcome, minors with guardian.

The not for profit venue Coburg RSL is holding its 3rd Band Night, a unique ALL ages experience where no one is too OLD or YOUNG. As a community managed club which does not rely on pokies for its revenue, the Coburg RSL aims for the Band Night to be a fun, family-friendly celebration of local independent acts. We welcome all musical acts and a special spotlight is put on young/new up and coming acts which may be playing their first shows. Celebrate your local heroes with us on Saturday 5 July. Mrs Barb Wire (MC for the night) and the friendly staff/volunteers of the Coburg RSL will wend you down a path full of happy surprises, not least of which is the 'Spam Raffle'. Coburg RSL Band Night #3, the best for less -- only $5 & includes light supper! Have a look at this line-up!

In the early 80’s on the outskirts of Perth, brothers Mark and Rob Snarski formed the darkly literate Chad's Tree. They had absorbed the music of the Velvet Underground, Television, The Doors, Tom Waits and Billie Holiday among others. They moved east, made records and then sadly at the end of the decade Chad's Tree disbanded. Mark formed the Jackson Code while younger brother Rob formed The Blackeyed Susans along with members of The Triffids and other luminaries. These days Mark Snarski lives in Madrid, has recorded and toured with his new project The Nearly Brothers with his pals - Mick Harvey, Martyn P. Casey, T.B. Allen and "Bongo”. He’s back in Australia for a spell and we are very grateful to have him join us with a solo set!

Mia Schoen sings with a remarkably unique yet consistent perspective. She is adept at many talents (multi-instrumentalist, songwirter, painter, teacher) and she is a flexible collaborator. Schoen’s ethos and aesthetic, are rooted in a suburban realism. She explores everyday existence through her songs, as well as through her paintings, which grace the sleeves of most of her releases. These days, Schoen has left the inner-city to set up home in the western suburbs, a landscape which continues to inspire her creative output. Even the name of her current band, New Estate, evokes this fascination with life beyond the rarefied environment of urban intellectuals and lifestyle poseurs. Musically, Schoen has translated early influences such as Flying Nun records’ speed-freak jangle, or the shambolic pop of Swell Maps and The Pastels into a style she can truly call her own, whether she’s furiously strumming skewed chords on her guitar or coaxing wheezing beauty from a vintage electric organ. She's playing a solo set.

Totally Mild is a self described 'pop, acapella, home recording' Melbourne band led by Melbourne’s Elizabeth Mitchell and including indie all-star Ashley Bundang. Following last September’s cassette tape release 'Castanet' and recent supports on album launches by everyone from Emma Russack to Full Ugly to Melbourne Cans, they’re putting out an LP later in the year via Bedroom Suck. Listen!

"Folk music with factoids"...Taylor Project are a Melbourne (and Elmore!) based country-folk band. They'll be playing a duo set. Youtube clips here: www.youtube.com/user/taylorproject?feature=watch

Special guests Brown & Hurley will perform their debut show and young local artists Tim & Bridget will enthral you.

Permablitz

Untitled-2
Newlands Primary School is having its first ever Permablitz this Sunday! We are going to plant an orchard, build a sandpit, put the groundwork in for a poa maze while the kids make lunch for us and create ephemeral cubby houses out of a couple of catoneaster trees.
The Newlands community is warmly welcomed and over the course of the day there will be a couple of fruit tree planting workshops for those interested.
We are starting at 10.30 and should be finished up by 4.00 and it would be wonderful to see some neighbourhood folk there (if only for an hour or two).

Help Needed

Untitled-2

Hi Newlanders and specifically Claremont Streeters,

Gigi here.

I was wandering down Claremont street a couple of days ago and saw poor old Maurice struggling to open his gate,  I helped him do it and we chatted and he said he has just come back from being in hospital for 8 months. He needs help walking his lovely, docile dog (just around the block for 10 minutes really) and maybe for someone/s to get the newspaper for him. I can help him out a couple of days a week but thought there would surely be others in the 'hood who'd like to help too. He has no family or friends close by.

If you'd like to email me, gi-atti@hotmail.com or call 9354 9337 0458 357 035 and I will organise a roster I can hand to Maurice. He is quite confused and unstable on his feet but very friendly and quite funny!

Thanks, keep warm.
Gigi.

Wanted

Untitled-2

Here I am, wishing I had a bluestone path through the mud to my front door, and some brick paving under the clothes line.
I bet you've got a bluestone pitcher or two lying about doing nothing, or seven leftover bricks from that project. Or maybe you know someone who does. Let me know and I'll gather them up! Meet one of your most resourceful or opportunistic neighbours! No quantity to large or too small-probably. Thanks, Newlands!

Untitled-2

Hi there Newland Community News Team,
I have just recently moved into the area (as a result of an ad in one of your newsletters) and thought I might ask for some help through the newsletter.
My name is Kurt and I have a beautiful, gentle Whippet called Piccolo. He is stressed as a result of the move into the area and craving company during the day. Is there anyone in the area who spends most of their time at home and who might like to care for him during the day? I would be happy to cover expenses and a little extra to the carer. He just needs company basically! He is house trained, very quiet and sleeps most of the time. There would be no need to walk him as I will do that each day, but if you were going out for a walk along he creek and wanted some company with you, he would love that. Please give me a call if you can help me out. My phone number is 0400 903 267 and email is kurtle@mac.com
Thanks and cheers,

Kurt.

Events

Untitled-2

Dear Friends,

A couple of important sustainability events / offers:

1.    Have your say on the DRAFT Urban Food Production Strategy!

The Urban Food Production Strategy describes how Council will work with the Darebin community to realise a shared vision for the cultivation, processing and distribution of food in Darebin. Feedback from residents, expert stakeholders and Council staff has been used to develop the Draft Strategy, recognising the existing wealth of experience in this area within the community. Visit www.darebin.vic.gov.au/ufps  to access the draft strategy and for details on how to submit feedback, including an invitation to attend a community consultation at the Council offices on July 2nd. For a fun, interactive experience, you can also have your say at the Darebin Sustainable Food leaders Forum (see below).

2.    Get in Quick to register your place at the Sustainable Food Leaders Forum Tuesday 17th June!

If you are passionate about a building a sustainable food future, why not join us at the Sustainable Food Leaders Forum on Tuesday 17th June from 5:30 – 7:30pm in the Function Room, Council Offices High Street Preston. As a group, we will discuss and critique the vision and key action areas of the Draft Urban Food Production Strategy, as well as hear about other exciting Sustainable Food and Food Security initiatives in Darebin. See attached agenda for more details. For more information and to RSVP, please contact Lee Tozzi on lee.tozzi@darebin.vic.gov.au or phone 8470 8392

3.    Darebin Council’s Solar Bulk Buy has been extended to 31st July 2014

Darebin City Council is working with solar power partners Positive Charge and Energy Matters to offer all Darebin property owners the chance to purchase a range of high-quality solar panel systems at a great rate. Darebin City Council has done the hard work to find households a good deal through these trusted providers.

Hurry - offer closes 31 July 2014!

These systems not only offer significant electricity cost savings by supplied renewable energy at your home, but also come with a 10 year warranty on panels, inverter and installation. Australia’s Renewable Energy Target is currently under review by the Federal Government. As a result, there is some industry speculation that the national rebate for solar (STCs) will be changed, including the possibility that it is reduced in value or removed. If you are considering installing solar panels in the next year or so, it may be a good time to proceed, before any changes to the Renewable Energy Target take place.

Prices and product details can be found on www.darebin.vic.gov.au/solar

To register for a free quote at www.PositiveCharge.com.au - make sure you click the Darebin Bulk Buy category to secure you discounted price. To request a quote by phone call Positive Charge on 9385 8525.

4.    It’s a Plastic Free July in Darebin!

Join us and take the Challenge this July!  Darebin City Council is taking part in the Plastic Free July Challenge and encouraging residents and businesses to do their best to avoid plastic waste for the entire month. By avoiding plastic bags and replacing single-use plastics, such as disposable cups, straws, and lunch wrap with reusable cups and containers for an entire month, we can help prevent some of the 1 million tonnes of plastic waste created in Australia each year.

It is easy to do:
·         Say no to plastic bags
·         Avoid packaged products
·         Bring your own bags/containers when shopping

Are you up for the Challenge? Register at www.plasticfreejuly.org or see the Darebin Council website: www.darebin.vic.gov.au/recycling

Kind regards,

Lee Tozzi

Nanny Available

Untitled-2
Hi All.
My work arrangements have changed recently and unfortunately we are not going to be able to keep on our wonderful nanny, Maria. I thought I would pass on her details in case anyone is looking for someone to look after their kids.
Maria is a really special combination of creative, fun, clever and no-nonsense. She has looked after our 1 and 3 year old for a day at home, as well as doing an afternoon pick up from childcare, for the last 6 or so months. People often ask, 'where do you find the good ones?' - Maria is one of them.
Please feel free to ring me for a reference (0422 779 840) or email Maria for more info (maria.chet@googlemail.com)

Thanks, Cecilia.

WORLD REFUGEE DAY MARCH
March for Justice for Refugees
Sunday 22nd June, 1:30pm, City Square, corner Swanston & Collins Streets, Melbourne
Calling for
·         Closure of Detention Centres on Manus Island and Nauru
·         Justice for Reza Barati, and all those who languish in Australia’s abhorrent detention system
·         Fair and timely processing of all requests for asylum

Dear Refugee Supporters,
Building on the momentum of the Walk for Justice on Palm Sunday, we encourage you to come out again for the World Refugee Day March on Sunday 22nd June, 1:30pm at the City Square.   The music starts at 1pm with South of the River Choir followed by Shakin’ The Tree.  Speakers from 1.30pm – 2.10pm, then march to Queensbridge Square (Southbank) for the Melbourne Mass Gospel Choir and two additional speakers.   MC - Corinne Grant.  Music also by Kavisha Mazzella and Celine Yap.
Speakers:    Sr.Brigid Arthur – Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project;  Adam Bandt, MP – Deputy Leader Australian Greens; Zakia Baig - Australian Hazara Womens Association;  Anna Burke, MP – former Speaker of the House of Representatives;  Tri Nguyen – Brunswick Baptist Church (Boat to Canberra Project *);  Youhorn Chea – President of the Cambodian Association of Victoria;   Lucy Honan –on behalf of the Refugee Advocacy Network.
*See more about the Boat to Canberra Project at https://www.facebook.com/giftofrefuge

Whistle blowers continue to reveal the appalling conditions in the centres on Nauru and Manus Island. Innocent people are imprisoned, denied dignity and freedom and stripped of all hope.  It is a regime of calculated cruelty. No arrests have been made for the attacks on asylum seekers, and there has been no justice for Reza Barati.  Minister Scott Morrison has admitted he cannot guarantee the safety of any of the detainees there.  Some detainees are being offered the untenable option of being resettled in Papua New Guinea – another place of danger for them, or Cambodia.  Australia must stop seeking to outsource our responsibilities to other countries.
The alternative to offshore processing is clear: welcoming refugees and processing their applications quickly in the community. This approach would be in keeping with our international legal obligations; it would be far less costly, and it would mean people would be treated with dignity.  Australia can and should accept many more asylum seekers.
The government is intent on discouraging people from seeking asylum in Australia – no matter what it takes.  The recent death of Leo Seemanpillai, an asylum seeker living in the limbo of extended uncertainty in the community, us a painful reminder of the damaging polices of deterrence, and the human cost of not welcoming those who seek our protection.   See video http://bit.ly/1hMLjfZ and statement on the death of Leo Seemanpillai,  by Rev David Pargeter, Executive Director, Commission for Mission, UCA Synod of Victoria & Tasmania.

There is rising concern within the community about the several and serious human rights violations, and the cruelty being inflicted on people under these policies.  Some members of parliament are now calling for an end to these shameful policies – we must stand with them to demand polices based on justice and compassion.    Come out and show your support for asylum seekers at the World Refugee Day March.

·         We believe Australia can and should be more generous and provide resettlement and permanent protection to more refugees and people seeking asylum.
·         We affirm the right of all asylum seekers to live in dignity and safety while their claims for protection are being processed in the community.
You can also support this action by:
v  Promoting the march through your networks
v  Bringing a group from your personal or other networks
v  Spreading the word by distributing leaflets and posters – print off and display in public places

Live like no-one else: ROOM IN MANSION TOWER IN THORNBURY
Hi there, I have a LARGE room available in a truly unusual house.
I live in Thornbury (a great part of town), a 10min walk to the tram, 13min to Croxton station (20min train ride into the city).
A stroll away from High Street Northcote and the supermarket and only a 35min bike ride to city.
The house is the first floor of an Italianate mansion converted into an apartment, with huge light filled rooms and high ceilings.
Your room is in the mansion's tower and available on 16th JUNE 2014.
It's BIG with a lovely outlook over the Thornbury + city views. It comes with a queen sized bed, 2 tall wardrobes, an open hanging space and desk.
I’m an easy going, active female working in jobs from graphic design to volunteering. I enjoy good food, reading, yoga, socialising, making the most of interesting music or shows Melbourne has on offer, bike riding & movies.
I love living here and would like to share the space with like-minded, positive people. I respect that people appreciate their own space, but also enjoy a chat over dinner. Would prefer a mature 30+ (but open to discussion).
$220 pw + bills + bond
If this sounds of interest, email me and tell me about yourself. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi there fellow Newlanders,

We are in desperate need of some fencing people to demolish and remove our existing dangerous brick fence and put up a new colorbond or paling fence.
I arranged times for 4 people to quote from the list in the leader and only 1 showed up!
Can anyone recommend someone to us?
Any help here would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks, Shannon.
