Dear Friends,
A couple of important sustainability events / offers:
1. Have your say on the DRAFT Urban Food Production Strategy!
The Urban Food Production Strategy describes how Council will work with the Darebin community to realise a shared vision for the cultivation, processing and distribution of food in Darebin. Feedback from residents, expert stakeholders and Council staff has been used to develop the Draft Strategy, recognising the existing wealth of experience in this area within the community. Visit www.darebin.vic.gov.au/ufps to access the draft strategy and for details on how to submit feedback, including an invitation to attend a community consultation at the Council offices on July 2nd. For a fun, interactive experience, you can also have your say at the Darebin Sustainable Food leaders Forum (see below).
2. Get in Quick to register your place at the Sustainable Food Leaders Forum Tuesday 17th June!
If you are passionate about a building a sustainable food future, why not join us at the Sustainable Food Leaders Forum on Tuesday 17th June from 5:30 – 7:30pm in the Function Room, Council Offices High Street Preston. As a group, we will discuss and critique the vision and key action areas of the Draft Urban Food Production Strategy, as well as hear about other exciting Sustainable Food and Food Security initiatives in Darebin. See attached agenda for more details. For more information and to RSVP, please contact Lee Tozzi on lee.tozzi@darebin.vic.gov.au or phone 8470 8392
3. Darebin Council’s Solar Bulk Buy has been extended to 31st July 2014
Darebin City Council is working with solar power partners Positive Charge and Energy Matters to offer all Darebin property owners the chance to purchase a range of high-quality solar panel systems at a great rate. Darebin City Council has done the hard work to find households a good deal through these trusted providers.
Hurry - offer closes 31 July 2014!
These systems not only offer significant electricity cost savings by supplied renewable energy at your home, but also come with a 10 year warranty on panels, inverter and installation. Australia’s Renewable Energy Target is currently under review by the Federal Government. As a result, there is some industry speculation that the national rebate for solar (STCs) will be changed, including the possibility that it is reduced in value or removed. If you are considering installing solar panels in the next year or so, it may be a good time to proceed, before any changes to the Renewable Energy Target take place.
Prices and product details can be found on www.darebin.vic.gov.au/solar
To register for a free quote at www.PositiveCharge.com.au - make sure you click the Darebin Bulk Buy category to secure you discounted price. To request a quote by phone call Positive Charge on 9385 8525.
4. It’s a Plastic Free July in Darebin!
Join us and take the Challenge this July! Darebin City Council is taking part in the Plastic Free July Challenge and encouraging residents and businesses to do their best to avoid plastic waste for the entire month. By avoiding plastic bags and replacing single-use plastics, such as disposable cups, straws, and lunch wrap with reusable cups and containers for an entire month, we can help prevent some of the 1 million tonnes of plastic waste created in Australia each year.
It is easy to do:
· Say no to plastic bags
· Avoid packaged products
· Bring your own bags/containers when shopping
Are you up for the Challenge? Register at www.plasticfreejuly.org or see the Darebin Council website: www.darebin.vic.gov.au/recycling
Kind regards,
Lee Tozzi
