Hello again everyone,
My apologies for a monumental 'you know what'!
Planting is the 19th, so rather than late notice, I have given you all really early notice!
Same details apply, same location though I have no idea about the weather.
Hope to see you all NEXT Sunday, the 19th.
While I'm correcting things, the September date on the calendar is wrong. we are planting and Christmas Party'ing
on the 20th, not the 21st.
Thanks to all of you who got back to me with corrections!
Regards,
David.
Hello FoEC members and friends,
I am sorry for late notice on our first planting for 2015 - I lost internet at home for a couple of days this week due to a modem passing on to electronics heaven. However, we are doing it! Planting is on this Sunday. We will be North of the Silurian Cliff site - head north from Ronald Street or south from Livingstone Street, east side of the creek. Forecast is for a cloudy day, 18 degrees and only a slight chance of early morning drizzle. The day is forecast to be cloudy and fine. Usual time 1-3 PM; although if you want to come earlier we will be on site well before then!
This year I am doing something a little different with the planting reminders - basically more details will be included which comes from the grant application that we submit to Melbourne Water. So here goes:
Silurian Cliff Site Extension (North End) and Site Maintenance (Ecological Vegetation Class [EVC] 851).
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Silurian Cliff site extension and maintenance project proposes an extension from the 2014 FoEC planting (MWCG funded project) at the northern fringe of the Silurian Cliff site on the east bank of the creek. It further compliments willow removal works undertaken by Melbourne Water at this site in 2012. Seven mature willows were removed from this site which created visual exposure for a high Silurian escarpment with picturesque Silurian stone formations visible from the water line and up the escarpment. FoEC has already planted a number of home propagated two year old EVC consistent plants in 2012 (approximately 40 plants – provenance sourced) along the creek edge and upper edge of the escarpment. The upper escarpment area was planted out in April 2013 (funded by a MWCG) and the proposed project compliments the 2013 planting and 2014 ‘willows’ extension and existing plantings along the stream bank north of the Silurian cliff.
The FoEC members planting at the site of the willow removal are now well established in the upper escarpment and lower creek bank and will assist with bank stabilisation and erosion control along the upper escarpment and creek edge. It is envisaged that as these plantings and the proposed works for this site will allow significant over shading of the creek which will have significant positive impacts on water quality.
This Silurian Cliff site has considerable habitat value, with seven remnant species identified in the area. One of these species, Eucalyptus leucoxylon ssp connata, is the only remnant specimen found in the Moreland municipality. A mature River Red-gum is also located at the base of the cliff and provides good hollows previously used by nesting Red-rumped Parrots. (Source: B.J. Bainbridge, J.M. Bush and M.A. Faithfull, 1998.
