Newlands Friends of the Forest

Untitled-2

Hello from Julie and Cath,

Reminder of this local event Monday night.

Thank you wonderful people for your interest in & support of our Forests.  Following our forest evening at Julies and  Forest tour last year - We are now taking the opportunity to respond to the (inadequate) Draft National Plan to preserve the Leadbeater's Possum and would love your help.

It would be fabulous if you could come on & let others know who are interested in this issue  that they are very welcome!

Details are below and attached will be updated on the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/947333052001844/

It would be great if you could RSVP by return email or by 'going' on FB.

Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Wonderful wishes!

Newlands Friends of the Forest.

Newlands Friends of the Forest

Invites you to a workshop:

Making your writing count, to save the Leadbeaters possum.

7pm -9pm
Monday 18th April 2016
Newlands Community House
20 Murray Road, Coburg North
$2 with additional donations to help preserve the Leadbeaters Possum welcome

We are excited to have Steve Meacher, President of Friends of Leadbeater’s Possum present to share information about the situation and prepare our own responses to the Federal Governments Draft  National Recovery Plan for Leadbeaters possum . We will also be looking at other things we can do to help preserve the amazing home of possum the Central Highlands.
We have computers & a printer ( stocked with Forest Free Paper) to use
& also encourage people to bring portable devises if they have them

Victoria’s Leadbeater’s  Possum:
        Is Critically Endangered (p11*)
Is rated as one of the world’s 100 highest priority mammal species for conservation  (p15*)
It is also very cute, lives only in Victoria, only an hours drive away from us near Healesville, and     its habitat is being logged.
Sadly the recent National Draft National Recovery Plan for the possum does not appear to be strong enough to stop it from becoming extinct ...and time is running out! ....
So we are coming together here in Newlands to prepare responses to this inadequate Plan to let the Department of Environment know we are aware about this and we do care.

  * The Australian Government has released a Draft National Recovery Plan for Leadbeater’s possum Gymnobelideus leadbeateri. The plan considers the conservation requirements of the species across (and beyond) its range and identifies the actions to stop the decline, and support the recovery, of the species such that its chances of long-term survival in nature are maximised.                    Public comment has been invited, with a closing date of 20 May 2016.
