We are writing to let you and your community know about a project that concerns the women's mural “From Bomboniere to Barbed Wire” located at the intersection of Hodgkinson St and Smith Street, Fitzroy. The mural was painted by artists Megan Evans and Eve Glenn in 1986 after extensive consultations with women in Northcote and Preston. The mural depicts these women.
The City of Yarra has asked the Women's Art Register (Danielle Hakim and I as the Convenors of the Register) to conduct a 6 month project to document the history of the mural and harness the strong community feelings about the mural since its defacement in in early 2016. We are seeking to once again engage the women of Northcote, Fitzroy, Thornbury and Preston in this project and want to let your entire community know about the project.
We are seeking stories and other ephemera and offerings, such as photos and anecdotes from community members about the creation of the mural in 1986 and its 30 year history including ongoing interventions by the public since the defacement.
We are encouraging your community to tell us your stories, share your images and get involved!
- Were you or someone you know at the infamous street party to launch the Women’s Mural in Hodgkinson Street and Smith Street, Clifton Hill, on Saturday 5th April, 1986?
- Did you photograph the Mural while the artists were painting
- Have you taken a photo in front of the mural at some stage over its 30 year history?
- Are you a friend of one of the Women depicted?
- Did you work at the Gas and Fuel depot behind the mural?
- Or do you just want to tell us what the Mural means to you?
Whatever your involvement with the mural and no matter how small your contribution is we want to hear it! So we are asking the community to help us complete the picture by sharing recollections, ephemera, photos etc. and to tell friends and neighbours about the project!
