Untitled-2

We want to let you know about four FREE upcoming events which might be of interest to you…

1.     CLIMATE FOR CHANGE TRAINING

We know that face-to-face conversations with people you trust are the best way of creating change. Darebin City Council has partnered with Climate for Change to deliver a free training session in Conversations on Climate Change to help you have those discussions.

This training will help you have conversations about climate change and talk to your friends, family and neighbours about Council’s Climate Emergency Action and Darebin’s draft plan.

Tuesday 2nd May 2017, 6.00pm-8.00pm at the Intercultural Centre, Preston

Light refreshments provided.

This is a free event but bookings are essential.

If you’re pretty new to the issues around climate change, you may want to watch this 20 minute video before the session:https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0it1gLARj0TN01WTXloUk5IZG8/view?usp=sharing

For more information about Climate for Change visit their facebook page.

2.     ‘GUARDING THE GALILEE’ DOCUMENTARY SCREENING AND PANEL DISCUSSION (part of the Stop Adani Campaign’)

Join Darebin Council and Darebin Climate Action now for a free screening of a critical Australian story of our times. ‘Guarding the Galilee’, presented by Michael Caton (the Castle) highlights the battle to stop the biggest coal mine in Australian history, Adani's Carmichael project and its potential impact.

In 30 minutes, the award-winning film team captures the stories and the raw beauty of Queensland’s outback, where the Adani coal mine threatens rivers, indigenous land rights, graziers, our precious Great Barrier Reef and tourism. If allowed to go ahead, this mine will contribute to dangerous climate change and extreme weather events – right at a time when we need to be aggressively cutting carbon emissions.

Guarding the Galilee will be followed by a panel discussion with Charlie Wood, Campaigns Director, 350.orgJane Morton, Convenor, Darebin Climate Action Now, and others soon to be confirmed.

This film is screened as part of Darebin Council's commitment to the Stop Adani Campaign’ and to help our community understand the devastating impact this project will have and what we can all do about it.

Thursday 17th May 2017, 6.15pm-8.30pm at the Shire Hall, 286 Gower Street, Preston

Light refreshments provided.

This is a free event but bookings are essential.

3.     COMMUNITY GROUP NETWORKING EVENT

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has” Margaret Mead

How can Council help our local community environment groups to work together, or learn from each other, to be more effective in their campaigns and activities?  Council would like community groups to join us for a discussion about how we might work together and provide support.  A great chance to network with likeminded people and find out what others are working on or planning.

Wednesday 31st May 2017, 6.00pm-8.30pm at the Shire Hall, 286 Gower Street, Preston

Light refreshments provided.

This is a free event but bookings are essential.

For more information about this event email environment@darebin.vic.gov.au or ring 8470 8373

Please note that this event is mainly intended to bring community groups together. If you wish to come as an individual, that’s fine but it would be great if you can indicate a group that you belong to who might like to be invited.

4.     ‘MINIMALISM’ DOCUMENTARY SCREENING AND Q & A SESSION

Missed the #1 indie documentary of 2016? With World Environment Day in June, it’s the perfect time to see what everyone has been talking about and consider the question, how might your life be better with less?

Minimalism: A Documentary about the Important Things examines the many flavours of minimalism by taking the audience inside the lives of minimalists from all walks of life—families, entrepreneurs, architects, artists, journalists, scientists, and even a former Wall Street broker—all of whom are striving to live a meaningful life with less.  The screening will be followed by a short post-film reflection.

Presented by Darebin Libraries in partnership with the City of Darebin’s Environment and Community Outcomes team.

Saturday 3rd June 2017, 2.00pm – 4.30pm at the Preston Library, 266 Gower Street, Preston

This is a free event but bookings are essential.  Book online at www.darebinlibraries.vic.gov.au or call 1300 655 355.
