I have started a petition on change.org to protest a proposal by the Turnbull Government to increase the English language test for citizenship. The new standard echoes the White Australia policy by making it very hard for non-Europeans to reach. It is higher than university standard writing, reading, speaking and understanding and much higher than requirements in the US, UK, Canada and New Zealand. It will disproportionately affect refugees and effectively bar a substantial number of permanent residents from ever becoming citizens, meaning they won't be able to vote, get a passport or stand for public office.
