Adopt a Native Pea
Come and celebrate spring!
Adopt a Native Pea at the Murnong Patch.
NB: Could be the perfect non-stuff present for Dad (and the family*).
Saturday 2nd September 1-3 pm south of Murray Rd bridge, between Merri Trail and Connolly Avenue.
Hello locals and nearby neighbours,
Native Peas are an important part of our grassland. You may think they are tough little herby things; they are, but only once truly established. If we plant them in winter, they get a bit shocked and survival rates are quite low; if we plant them in spring they enjoy the warmer conditions but need a bit of nurturing over their first summer. Some are not very big so harder to track to learn how to do it right.
So planting Native Peas this Saturday leaves us with a slight problem ... and you, locals and near neighbours, may be the solution!
We are looking for people willing to:
- Come and plant some Native Peas with us on Saturday 2nd of September 1-3 pm.
- Add a label nearby plus record the planting position on a map, (so can be found again!). We also keep a copy of the map.
- Then ‘adopt’ 2-3 plants by checking on them every so often.
The checks and care are:
- Small watering (yes, small, maximum a small bucket a few times over summer).
- Note how they are doing.
- Maybe some gentle weeding at your own convenient time over the coming year.
These casual visits are easy for locals and nearby neighbours but if you are really committed, please step forward! The rewards could be flowering (and seeding, how exciting!) this year or the next. It could also be a ton of fun and learning, a lovely local networking opportunity and the chance to experience the seasonal looks and moods of the amazing and beautiful Murnong Patch while expressing true Caring for Country Together.
Oh, there will also be plenty else to do to enhance and care for the Murnong Patch including some less sensitive plantings.
* Family units and teams of friends or neighbours are welcome. It is up to you what you call family: married, not married, straight, gay, with children, without children ... We are after families (or persons) who value nature.
