The lovely story of Matted Flax Lily and the Bees
The first Saturday of the month is coming round and you know what it means: activity time at the Murnong Patch!
Saturday 5th of August, 1-3 pm South of Murray Road Bridge,
between the Merri trail and Connolly Avenue
There is quite a rare plant on the Merri, the Matted Flax Lily (Daniella aemona if you want to be technical), that got its remnant population fragmented to the point it may no longer cross-pollinate. For this to happen, and prevent genetic decline, it needs 2 things: diversity of plant’s origins and a pollinator, the Blue banded bee, that itself needs a diversity of food supply. You can read more about the plant here and watch about the bee here. The Murnong Patch already offers that food diversity but we currently do not have any Matted Flax Lilies on site. But, have no fear, is it so happens we have been propagating a few of these plants over the last few years and can start adding some to the Bee’s menu, contributing in our small way to the conservation effort of the Friends of Merri Creek and Merri Creek Management Committee. In the following years we will add more Matted Flax Lilies from varied origins.
So, would you come and help plant these? Just like the Flax Lily needs the Blue Banded Bees, the Murnong patch needs you! Be part of our very own Newlands’ Lilies and the Bees story! It is soooo easy, just turn up. We will show you the ropes of what we do, no age or ability a limit as we do so many diverse things, not just planting and a Murnong gathering in November.
See you at the patch this Saturday 1-3 pm.
