Cypress Trees

Untitled-2

Urgent: Imminent removal of 40 huge cypress trees from James St boundary of Coburg cemetery.

We’ve just received notice of the imminent removal of 40 massive cypress trees along the James Street boundary of the Coburg Cemetery commencing on July 1 and to be completed within four days.

Have contacted Darebin Council’s Compliance Department and it appears that the Cemeteries Trust had not notified the council about this major operation, especially as the removal of trees requires council approval.

We're concerned that the removal of 40 very large trees within just a few days will have a devastating impact on the birds and other wildlife that the trees provide habitat for (including magpies, ravens, currawongs and bats).

We're hoping that the Council may be able to at least temporarily halt the process because of the permit issue, but we're deeply concerned that it might ultimately go ahead some time very soon. We understand that there are public safety issues involved but think that other approaches should be considered, and at least that we should be able to see audit report that has led to this decision by the Cemeteries Trust.

If you’re interested in adding your voice to concerns about this major operation, could you try contacting the Cemeteries Trust and Darebin Council, and also get in touch with me  - Philip  0425 748 328  (pshirrefs@gmail.com) to see what we can do.

Philip.
