Community Climate Action Sessions at the Newlands Neighbourhood House
August and September 2019 Schedule - Part of an Ongoing Series!
This is a series hosted by Neighbours United for Climate Action (NUCA) and Newlands Parents for Climate Action. The workshops sessions are varied but are tied together by the themes of community connection, knowledge, action and resilience in a time of climate crisis.
All sessions are on Saturday afternoons and will include time to connect with other attendees over afternoon tea. Children are welcome to accompany adults.
August 10th 2-4pm -
Native Forests and Climate Action
Newlands Friends of the Forest’s Cath Rouse and guests will enlighten us on the role of Victorian native forests in Climate Change and community health, and give an overview of our forests' current situation and some ways we can make a difference.
August 24th 2-4 pm - Climate Quilt Project
Join the Climate Quilters (Carol or Mary) to contribute to making a quilt which can be taken to protests and at displayed events as a way of increasing awareness about the climate emergency, and for our own connectivity and well-being. Bring an image which comes to mind, illustrating the seriousness of the plight of planet earth and a square of lightweight fabric, cotton or linen, second hand is fine (synthetics can be harder to work) - 30mm x 30mm (11inches x 11 inches). (The finished visible size of the square will be 25.4cm x 25.4cm (10 inches x 10 inches)). Or you can use the materials provided.
September14th 2-4 pm - Banner and sign making in preparation for the Climate Strike
Join local families for some banner and sign painting in preparation for the Global Climate Strike on 20th September. Kids and adults can work together or separately to write and design the message they’d like to bring. Not able to make the rally? A photo of your sign/s on social media is a great way to express your support for urgent action on climate from our leaders. This is also an opportunity to make connections with other families and maybe make plans for traveling to the rally together. Bring cardboard if you have some, some basic materials provided.
September 28th 2-4pm - Food waste presentation and ideas sharing session
Come along to learn about what a powerful role we all have in reducing our food waste, and why, plus learn some new tips to reduce your food waste and share your tips with others, in this highly interactive session. There will be plenty of time to socialise while we enjoy the afternoon tea provided by the hosts - and you can take home any leftovers, so there won't be any food wasted!!!
