Hello to all in the area..

I have a pensioner friend who is sleeping under not such good circumstances. I would like to get him a couple of queen woollen blankets, which at this time of the year is not easy and quite expensive. If anyone has anything that they no longer need I am happy to pay you a reasonable price. I will pick up and pay cash. I can fix or re-sew most damage. Appreciate any help.

Climate Action

Untitled-2

EMPOWERING MORELAND
Community Climate Action Forum

Thursday August 7, 2014 at 7pm
Coburg Concert Hall (90 Bell St)
Hosted by Rod Quantock

Our governments have failed to act on climate change – indeed some are now winding back climate policies.
The good thing is we don't have to wait for governments to do something. The fight for a safe climate is being fought on other fronts and real progress is being made. Ordinary people everywhere are taking action on climate in places that often aren't in the news - the council chambers, churches, bank branches and school halls we pass every day.
Around Australia and the world people are getting involved in actions to change our institutions to drive the change we need to see in our economies, our societies and our politics.
Moreland is host to a range of activities where people are working together to put action on climate change back on the agenda. Some examples are: Fossil fuel divestment campaigns, local climate education events, pressuring political candidates, increasing the climate resilience of our community, developing community renewable energy facilities, and organising local food production.
By working together we can turn the tide. In fact, that tide is already rising (just as the science predicted!) and it will flow through our community and uplift us as we do what needs to be done.
Together, our voices and our actions can make a difference
If a safe climate is important to you, there isn’t any choice in this – action is mandatory. Join us now in grassroots community climate action!
Come to our Community Climate Action Forum: Empowering Moreland to find out more.  Bring your own ideas, bring your enthusiasm and bring a friend!
Venue is at the rear of the Coburg Town Hall. Entrance via Urquhart St.
This is Family Friendly Event.

Speakers from Climate Action Moreland and 350.org

Hi Newlands News Organiser,  I was wondering if you could pass onto the provider of the post about the strange behaviour, the importance of providing all of the information to the Police?
I believe the police have in the past investigated related strange behaviour in the area and I'm sure any new information would help them.
It wasn't clear from the post if they have alerted the police or not but it would be great if they could do that. Thanks.
PS - thanks for your work on the news posts, its a really great service.
Cheers!

Flat For Rent

Untitled-2
There is a big spacious two bed roomed light filled lovely flat for indefinite rent for $390 a week in North Melbourne....anyone interested?

Description:
The apartment is in Brougham Street, North Melbourne, which is in the Hotham Hill area, close to Royal Park, and in the University High School zone.
It is bright, spacious, and solid - would suit friends sharing, a couple, or a young family.
It is on the top floor and has lots of natural light.
It is freshly painted throughout.
It has a brand new kitchen (you will be the first person to use it) with a dishwasher and Euro appliances, and plenty of cupboard/pantry space.
Generous additional storage with large built-in cupboards in the two bedrooms and the hallway.
The central bathroom has a shower and a bath, and a separate toilet.
Security entrance and deadlock on the apartment door make this a very safe and secure place to live.
Local conveniences - a large local supermarket, Asian grocery, laundromat and several cafes are all around the corner.
Walking distance to three tram lines, to Royal Park, and the The Royal Children's Hospital. The shopping and entertainment areas of Errol Street and Lygon Street are also pleasant walking distance away.
This is a 1970s apartment block - which means it is well-built and solid, with good soundproofing and privacy between apartments. Best of all, they made things more generously in those days, so it is much BIGGER than most inner-city units on offer!
Pleasant balcony with sunset views gives you your own private outdoor space, with room to grow a small garden, to sit, hang out, and relax.
The rent is $390 per week.
Interested people can contact me directly (gillian@gillianhowell.com.auor 0422450452).
The property is currently listed with Nelson Alexander, and there are two Open Inspections each week if people want to see it.
Lease length is minimum 6 months - longer can be negotiated. The property is available indefinitely.

facebook.com/CoburgRSLbandnight
Saturday 2 August, 7pm, $5, All ages 0-101+ are welcome (minors with guardian)
The not for profit venue Coburg RSL is holding its 4th music Band Night on Saturday 2 August, a unique ALL ages experience where no one is too OLD or YOUNG. The club does not rely on pokies for its revenue, so the Coburg RSL is developing this Band Night to connect with the community. A special spotlight is put on independent, young/new, up and coming acts. On the first Saturday of every month, Mrs Barb Wire (our fantastic MC) and the friendly staff/volunteers of the Coburg RSL will wend you down a path full of happy surprises, not least of which is the 'Spam Raffle'. This month brings another amazing lineup of talented artists. Come along and you are in for a treat!
Tangrams
Formed in Melbourne in 2012, Tangrams draw on influences ranging from the sonic-crooning of Scott Walker and Nancy Sinatra, to the syncopated distortion of Big Black and New Order. Their songs entwine male and female vocals, thudding rhythms and spasmodic guitar lines doused with reverb. Tangrams have recently released their first studio recording; a 5-track EP titled 'Waves'. Have a listen and come see!tangramssound.bandcamp.com/
Popolice
Marc Regueiro-Mckelvie  plays loud and passionate guitar noise drenched power pop songs. He’s a poet and a master of distortion. A great mix in our book. Mess+Noise says “Popolice [is music which] makes you fall in love with guitar all over again. Marc Regueiro-Mckelvie (New Estate, Enclosures, Teeth & Tongue) …  [taps into] the romance of power-pop without forgetting the snide edges.” http://messandnoise.com/articles/4621422
Cabin InnCabin Inn is the love child of Rossco Harvey (Through Lost Hope, May, bare bones, Axes for Exes & / \ ), a master in the art of reinvention. Conceived during a long North Melbourne winter, Cabin Inn expertly combines the best of confessional singer-songwriters (think Richard Buckner, Bill Callahan and Ben Gibbard), 60’s girl group doo-wop and lush post-punk. Lyrics, when delivered, are done in a deep and sometimes disturbing baritone, hitting you hard in the heart before soothing you, like the perfect coffee enjoyed inside, warm in pyjamas as an immense storm rolls across imagined hills outside your window. Never what you expect, the hazy heartbreak of Cabin Inn will keep you in a state of suspense while filling you with memories of times past and of hope for those yet to come.soundcloud.com/cabin-inn
Inevitable Orbit
Julian Williams' musical journey could be described as ‘out of the ordinary’. Coming from the experimental scene, even once part of ‘the world’s weirdest band’(Hi God People), Julian decided to do something different: start “a song band” or in other words, make structured pop songs ‘with an angular paradigm’. Together with friends Frances Plagne and Greg Allom they organically became Inevitable Orbit in 2005. Drawing on broad influences including Pere Ubu and Flying Nun, it’s not what you’d expect, and everything you’d want to hear. inevitableorbit.bandcamp.com/releases#zplays
The Happy Lonesome
The elusive Happy Lonesome speak for themselves. myspace.com/thehappylonesome/music/songs
Claire Birchall
Claire has been making beautiful, soulful music, writing songs and recording them since the mid-90’s. She took up guitar at 13, and began recording on 4-track cassette at 17, where she became a prolific songwriter and recorder. As well as continuing her work as a solo artist, she also plays in bands Paper Planes and The Happy Lonesome.clairebirchall.bandcamp.com/
Ada Hale is a local young’un who is no stranger to performance ... She has been in bands since primary school and is currently studying drama with the Melbourne Theatre Company. Come along and support this talented young lady!

Strange Behaviour

Untitled-2

2.20pm Tuesday July 22.
Very pink, very bald, very naked man seen running down the hill on west (Newlands Rd) side of Edgar’s creek. Just north of the closed-off traffic bridge. Last seen furtively scurrying from high ground under power lines downhill towards the cliff, where I saw him dress behind a tree. He slipped off after that but other dog walkers saw a lone man (dressed) appear from creek gully moments later so I have circumstantial evidence as to his identity and the house he lives in.
It’s a shame we live in an age when a spot of natural nudity might make an open-minded father of small children uneasy but, well, we do.......

Hi.

Does anyone have an old macbook pro power source (85WMagSafe Power Adapter) with the magnetic adapter sitting around at home in a box full of old cables/connections?

Our macbook purchased in about 2008 had the power source fizzle and burst into flames so now we have no way of charging the computer….its still ok to use, but getting pretty old by laptop standards, however can’t afford the $99 for one from the apple store to replace!  Thought there might be someone out here who has one lying around in storage that they don’t need anymore?
Please contact if you do…

Sue (Coburg North)

Thanks!!
