Food Know How – A Recipe for Taste, Not Waste: a household food waste reduction program to be rolled out in Moreland from October 2015 – April 2016.
Across Melbourne wasted food makes up between 40-50% of the average household waste bin. This equates, for the average household, to throwing away about $2,000 in food each year.
Moreland has joined with Darebin, Maribrynong, Whittlesea and Yarra Councils, with funding from the Victorian Government’s Metropolitan Local Government Waste and Resource Recovery Fund, to target household food waste. Food waste is a key action area in Council's Waste and Litter Strategy 2014-2017 with an aim to reduce the amount collected, as part of Waste Service kerbside collections, and sent to landfill.
The Food Know How program empowers people with the knowledge to assist them in reducing the amount of food waste they generate at home, while also giving them some useful tips and practices to help save money when it comes to buying food.
Joining the Food Know How Program as a member is FREE and open to residents of the participating Councils (including their staff).
